Financial Capability The What Works Fund is a critical part of building the evidence base – and helping to make the case – for improving financial capability across the UK. As reports are finalised and quality assured, the Money Advice Service will be developing plans on the best way to build on this evidence to: Demonstrate the benefits of improving financial capability for different groups of people Influence funders to ensure they are funding interventions that work Influence organisations whose work impacts on financial capability so they can develop and improve their work Influence policy makers so that financial capability moves up their agenda We are planning to hold an event in the Autumn to showcase what we have learnt which we hope will feature many of the What Works projects and their insights into what works. What your learning and sharing plans told us want to do • Think about opportunities to reach out to other grantees to build on what you are planning. For example: • If you are planning an event, why don’t you consider partnering with another project – this could help increase impact and share the workload. • If you are writing a blog, press release or doing a podcast of webinar, other projects might have channels like a newsletter or blog where you could promote what you have done. • If you are planning social media activity, other projects are likely to be using social media too – make sure you are following the What Works Fund projects and asking for support on social. • 19 projects doing specific events - including parliamentary roundtables and launch events • 19 want to influence policy by lobbying government (Westminster, devolved governments, and local authorities) • 17 are writing blogs or articles • 15 are sending out press releases or seeking media coverage • 13 are using social media • 10 are creating and sharing visual content – whether infographics, vlogs or animations • 4 want to get articles published in academic journals • 3 podcasts • 3 webinars Learning and Sharing Webinar

Working together to improve reach and amplify the FinCap message • MAS is developing its plans to launch our findings from the What Works Fund programme in Autumn and we would love you and your project to be part of it. • We will also be using FinCap Week 2018 (12 – 18 November) to showcase What Works and this could be a great opportunity to increase your reach. • In the meantime … • We know some projects won’t be able to wait to talk about their findings. • If that’s you, we want to support you to improve the impact of your work as much as possible. Why disseminate your WWF evidence? • Use your own WWF evidence to: • Raise the profile of your organisation/department/service • Influence your organisation’s priorities, policy & practice • Engage with commissioners and funders to continue, expand, adapt your service • Inform local, regional & national policy makers and practitioners • With MAS and the ELP: • Contribute to national dissemination activity • Help shape UK sector development e.g. discussions with policy makers and influencers • Influence future UK commissioning and funding • To support the UK Financial Capability Strategy • To share learning with the wider fincap community • To shape future fincap delivery • To inform commissioners and funders #WWFSharing
What’s the purpose of you dissemination activity? For example: #WWFSharing
Target your message and your audience • Know your target audience – do some homework if necessary, find out the right person/people to communicate with • What are their priorities? What are they worried about? How can your evidence help them? • Are there credible messengers who can help spread your message? How can you get them on board e.g. joint event, publish your findings in their newsletter? • Concentrate less on what you want to say and more on what you want your audience to hear #WWFSharing
Get your message right • Pitch your information at the right level • Make written work short but not dumb • Go straight to the main point/points • Avoid jargon and assumed knowledge • Include any accessible facts and figures that convey the context or the issue easily. Be clear and concise about the limitations of the findings • For policymakers, include policy recommendations or set out the implications of your evidence • You may only have 30 seconds to get their interest. Be concise, precise, and specific. • Do you have a press or public affairs person? Can they help with messages, branding etc.? #WWFSharing

The project: Dosh – financial capability project, providing 121 support through trained Dosh mentors. Started in 2013. A2Dominion, Catalyst Housing, Ealing Council. Grant to expand into new areas: Spelthorne and Oxford; scale up advice and support through digital, with development of new app, and test the effectiveness on struggling and squeezed: 121 support only (Dosh mentors, volunteers, partners) 121 combined with digital (Dosh mentors, partners, Ask David, other digital platforms Digital only Key partners: - Brunel University, Research Partner - Deloitte Digital - HACT (Housing Associations Charitable Trust) Targets: 480 offline 500 online/digital Who we are: A2Dominion Housing Group is one of the UKs largest social housing providers with over 37,000 properties and 60,000 residents across London and the South East. 60% General Needs Social tenants (local authority or housing association) have a higher probability of over-indebtedness than those who rent from a private landlord (29% vs 21%) – MAS 2015 Indebtedness Report Context Communicating Key Findings from the Dosh Project 2017/18
