The Tool Includes Two Types of Questionnaires • 11 Age-Specific Questionnaires Concerning Child Development • A Questionnaire About Those Early Life Experiences or Risk Factors That Predispose Children to Having Disabilities or Other Special Needs. The CICC Discovery Tool and Referral System DESC3

If The Child Was PrematureThe Discovery Tool Adjusts for Prematurity • Definition: A baby born before 37 weeks gestation (the time from conception to birth) is considered premature; when born before 32 weeks, a child is considered significantly premature. • Adjustment for Prematurity is made automatically online by the Discovery Tool. Functional Skills • Basic Functional Skills Which Scientific and Clinical Research Indicates the Average Child of a Certain Age Will Develop and Demonstrate • Examples: For a 4 to 5 month old child Body Movement - Physical Development and Motor Skills, such as: “Does baby push ups” or “Brings hands and toys to his or her mouth” The CICC Discovery Tool and Referral System DESC9
Potential Problem Behaviors • Behaviors That May Interfere with a Child’s Ability to Learn and to Get Along with Others When They Occur or Do Not Occur During Certain Age Periods • Examples: For a Child in the 2 year, 6 month through 2 year, 11 month age period Language Behaviors such as “Staring into space or talking to self a lot” Or “Not speaking at all” The CICC Discovery Tool and Referral System DESC10
