  3. History & Independence • British colonized India • Nationalism, extreme pride in one’s country, grew in the late 1800s • Mohandas Gandhi used nonviolent resistance against British • Peacefully resisted by boycotting, or refusing to purchase, British cloth

Religion • Majority Hindu • Hindus believe in reincarnation • Society organized according to a caste system, a social hierarchy in which people are born into a group that has a distinct rank in society • Untouchables have fewer educational & economic opportunities • Other religions: Islam, Christianity, Sikhism,

  5. Village Life • 7 /10 Indians live in villages & farm for a living • Mostly vegetarian b/c of religious & economic reasons • Many people are illiterate • Most families are large • Joint family system—where many members of an extended family live in a single household

Urbanization • Cities are overcrowded & poor, but offer more opportunities for work & education than rural areas • Mumbai, on the west coast, is the busiest port & financial center • Chennai & Kolkata are centers of commerce & shipping on the east coast • Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganges, is the Hindus holiest city • Many hope to visit at least once in their lifetime to wash in the sacred Ganges River
