Purdue Teacher Education and P-12 Assessment. Foundational Assessment.
E N D
Foundational Assessment • Adopt the Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation’s (JCSEE) Classroom Assessment Standards: Sound Assessment Practices for PK-12 Teachers as a framework for guiding the improvement of curricula, instruction and candidate assessments related to P-12 student assessment. • Teach foundational assessment content in a stand-alone assessment course • Embed additional assessment content within Blocks I and II courses for all teacher education candidates. Incorporate assessment into TIP experiences • Move EDPS 23500 to Block I, and EDCI 28500 to Block II in order to introduce early assessment that is built upon in EDPS 26500 • All teacher education candidates should take the assessment and block courses early in their programs of study
Applied Assessment • Faculty members in each disciplinary area should examine and map JSCSEE assessment standards to each of their courses. • Prior to practicum and student teaching, each candidate must demonstrate preplanning mastery • Within each disciplinary area, require a comprehensive portfolio or capstone project • Candidates should develop a greater sense of the cultural and ethical nuances of assessment • Candidates and graduates would be encouraged to foster learning-centered approaches to understanding and incorporating assessment practices into their instructional skill-set
Professional Development • Develop assessment related electronic instructional modules for candidates in initial and advanced graduate teacher education programs, P-12 professionals, volunteer Purdue faculty, and graduate instructors. • Make use of the Passport platform for advanced candidates and professional educators seeking professional development to earn Digital Badges as they complete modules in assessment content • Allow for Professional Growth Points (PGPs) to be earned by practicing teachers for professional development
Activity • Identify three main purposes for classroom assessment. • Where and how do you currently teach foundational assessment content? • Assessment literacy is defined as an understanding of the principles of sound assessment. Identify what and how you currently teach assessment literacy skills in your program area. • What recommendations would you add to those already made by the task force?
