  4. What is Energy? • Usable power from various sources • In the human body, food is our energy source • Power of energy is used to run our appliances, move our cars, give us light, etc.

  5. Where does energy come from? • Comes in different forms – heat (thermal), light (radiant), mechanical, electrical, chemical and nuclear • Most of the energy comes from fossil fuels (gas, oil and coal) • Renewable energy sources include solar power, wind power and hydroelectric power

  6. 2007 FLL Theme • Consider some of the energy choices • Find out how these choices affect the world • Analyze the energy choices and work to improve energy use

  8. For This Year’s Project Select a building in your community and evaluate the energy use 1 Talk to experts and propose solutions to reduce the consumption or move toward alternative energy uses 2 Share changes for your building with your community 3

  9. Identifying Topic Select a building in your community and evaluate the energy use 1 • Discuss different energy sources used in your community • Choose a building such as a school or municipal building • Contact the manager of the building to perform an energy audit

  10. Identifying Topic • During the audit look at what energy is used, how it is used and how much is used • Contact experts to find out the process of how different energy is made • Effects of this energy on the environment, its availability and cost

  11. Talk to experts and propose solutions to reduce consumption 2 Create a Solution • Look for areas of improvement in the building that you choose: • How efficient is the energy use? • How could you make it better? • What about their sources of energy?

  12. Create a Solution • Research potential alternate energy solutions • Propose short-term and long-term changes to move toward renewable energy • Is there a way to reduce the energy consumption at the building?

Present Your Solution Share changes for your building with your community 3 • Share your solution with others in your community • Educate your classmates about what you learned • Show your presentation to family and friends • Design a brochure or a storyboard • Present your findings to a sponsor • See the impact you and your team can have on your community and the world

  16. At The Tournament You will need a clever way to present your ideas • Up to 5 minutes for presentation (including setup time) • Judges will ask you questions • Make your team stand out!!!!!
