GQ1 • Who is this (A) ? • Which famous role X by a famous veteran actor Y did he reprise in a remake of movie Z ? • Hrithik Roshan is reprising the lead role played by B in the original version. • The original Z was produced by Yash Johar. • The title was taken from a poem penned by Harivansh Rai Bachchan and which is recited at the beginning of the movie and creates a thematic link that continues through the movie, particularly in the climax, both literally and metaphorically. • It was considered to be a loose adaptation of the 1983 Hollywood film Scarface starring Al Pacino, however others believe it is based on the life Mumbai underworld gangster Manya Surve. • Yash's son Karan Johar's produced the remake in 2011-12 under the same name. • B and Mithun Chakraborty received the National Award for Best Actor and Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award respectively for their performances in the original version. • A,B X,Y and Z ? GQ2 • ______ is a town in Lucknow district in Uttar Pradesh situated 14 km north of Lucknow. • More widely known for its kebabs, Zardozi work and Dasheri mangoes,it houses palatial houses of Muslim gentry of Oudh and numerous mosques. • It is also the centre of once flourishing Urdu poetry and literature - seat of the Qadiria Qalandaria Sufi order and the Urs that attracts thousands every year. • It is famous for producing hundreds of civil servants in British India who served all over the country. Picture at bottom is of the rocks/hills at Ramanagaram town some 40 kms from Bangalore en route to Mysore. • Much of Sholay was shot in the rocky terrain of Ramanagaram. • One part of Ramanagaram town was renamed "Sippynagar" after the director of the film. Even to this day, a visit to the "Sholay rocks" (where the film was shot) is offered to tourists traveling through Ramanagaram. • Passage to India is a 1984 film written and directed by David Lean based on the 1924 novel of the same title by E. M. Forster and the 1960 play by Santha Rama Rau that was inspired by the novel. • The central plot takes place in Marabar Caves are based on the actual Barabar Caves, some 35 km north of Gaya. • Lean used two separate hills at Ramnagram for shooting most of the scenes connected to these caves in the movie.

GQ4 • A was a 1976 Hindi film made by Shyam Benegal, based on a story written jointly by Shyam Benegal and B. • B is considered as the Father of the White Revolution in India (Operation Flood),which started in 1970,ushering an era of plenty,from a measly amount of milk production and distribution earlier. • A went on to win the 1977 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Vijay Tendulkar and was also Indian submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for 1976. • The title song (see video),whose lyrics are "Mero gaam kathaparey" was sung by Preeti Sagar who won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for that year. • The song was later used as the soundtrack for the television commercial for brand C. A - Manthan (The Churning) • B - Verghese Kurien • C - Amul • The film traces a small set of poor farmers of Kheda district in Gujarat under leaders like local social worker Tribhovandas Patel, who took up the cause of farmer, lead to the formation of Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers' Union. • Soon the pattern was repeated in each district of Gujarat, which in turn led to the formation of Amul, a daily cooperative in Anand, Gujarat in 1946, which is today, jointly owned by some 2.6 million milk producers in Gujarat, India. • Eventually this led to the initiation of White Revolution of India in 1970, by creating a ‘Nationwide Milk Grid’, and setting up of ‘Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd.(GCMMF) in 1973, whose 5, 00,000 members, jointly financed the film, by donating Rs. 2 each. • Upon its release, truckloads of farmers came to see 'their’ film, thus making it a box office success.

  17. Kurien is credited with being the architect of Operation Flood - the largest dairy development program in the world. • He and his team were pioneers in inventing the process of making milk powder and condensed milk from buffalo's milk instead of cow's milk. • This was the reason Amul became so successful and competed well against Nestle who only used cow milk to make powder and condensed milk. In India buffalo milk was the main raw material unlike Europe where cow milk is abundant. • His life story is chronicled in his memoirs 'I too had a dream'. • (see clip)

GQ6 • There was no way Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi was going to make it big in Bollywood with that mouthful of a name. • Born in Indore, MP to a mill worker,he tried his hand at different occupations, including the job of a conductor in Bombay's (B.E.S.T) buses. • While issuing tickets as a conductor, Badruddin used to entertain passengers aboard with some antics which caught the attention of actor and script-writer Balraj Sahni in 1950 while he was once traveling in a bus. • Sahni was penning the script for the movie, Baazi (1951), and introduced Badruddin to Guru Dutt as a candidate for the role of a comedian. • Badruddin's screen test consisted of acting as a drunk, and he did it so well that Guru Dutt gave him the screen name, ______ ______. • The irony was that he remained a teetotal all his life. • Who?

  23. Johnny Walker • named after the famous brand of Scotch whisky. • He had a close friendship with Guru Dutt, who would often change scripts of his movies to accommodate a role for Johnny. The untimely death of Guru Dutt in 1964 deeply impacted him. • His role in Anand showed that he could excel in a serious role even if it was for only a few minutes. • His last performance was in actor/director Kamal Hasan's Chachi 420 in 1998; he had performed at the request of poet/director/writer Gulzar who had scripted that movie.

A - Skopje • B - Macedonian • X - Alexander the Great • Y - Mother Teresa (born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu) • Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic nun of Albanian ethnicity who first arrived in India in 1929. • In the 1970s, she became well-known internationally for her humanitarian work and advocacy for the rights of the poor and helpless. • At the time of her death,she had 610 missions in 123 countries, including hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children's and family counselling programs, orphanages, and schools. • She received numerous awards,including the Bharat Ratna (1980) and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. • Following her death in 1997, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II and given the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.

GQ8 • Id X,Y and Z • X - The Father : • On 21 July 1947,the Dutch launched a large scale attack on Indonesia. • President Sukarno ordered his trusted lieutenant Dr.Sjahrir to leave the country to create international public opinion against the Dutch and also persuade the friendly countries to raise the issue before the UNO. He tried to come out but could not succeed as the Dutch had absolute control over Indonesian sea and air routes and was also under surveillance. • Pandit Nehru came to his help at this critical juncture.He entrusted this task to X, who was an expert Pilot and was famous for his passion for adventurous achievements. • As an avid reader of the history of Kalinga, X knew how Kalinga and Indonesia had a long-standing cultural link in the past. • He flew to Java and brought Sultan Sjahrir aboard from Java islands on 22 July 1947 by his own Dakota and reached India via Singapore on 24 July. • For this act of bravery X was awarded 'Bhoomi Putra', the highest Indonesian award and a rare distinction ever granted to a foreigner. • Lesser known is X's daredevil flights to land Indian troops during the 1947 Kashmir operations.

Biju Patnaik (1916–1997) was an Indian politician and CM of Orissa. • In 1951 he established the international Kalinga Prize for popularisation of Science and Technology among the people and entrusted the responsibility to the UNESCO. • He was known to have spearheaded projects like the Hirakud Dam, Port of Paradip, Orissa aviation centre, Bhubaneswar Airport, the Cuttack-Jagatpur Mahanadi highway bridge, REC Rourkela, Sainik School Bhubaneswar, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology Bhubaneswar, Rourkela Steel Plant and the Choudwar and Barbil industrial belts. • He also established the Kalinga Cup in foot ball. • Naveen Patnaik is an Indian politician and the current CM of Orissa, and the chief of Biju Janata Dal, a regional political party in Orissa. • Gita Mehta (born 1943) completed her education in India and at the University of Cambridge,UK. • Her books have been translated into 21 languages and been on the bestseller lists in Europe, the US and India. • The subject of both her fiction and non-fiction is exclusively focused on India: its culture and history, and the Western perception of it.Her works reflect the insight gained through her journalistic and political background. • Gita Mehta divides her time between New York, London and New Delhi.

GQ9 • Born Uma Devi Khatri in UP in 1923,she ran away from home and arrived in Bombay at the age of 13 and knocked on composer Naushad’s door.He auditioned her and hired her on the spot. • She made her debut as a solo playback singer, in Wamiq Azra (1946),working with legends like Naushad Ali. • In 1947, she had huge hits with "Afsana likh rahi hoon dil-e-bekrar ka" , "Yeh Kaun Chala Meri Aankhon Mein Sama Kar" and "Aaj Machi Hai Dhoom Jhoom Khushi Se Jhoom", "Betaabhai Dil Dard-e-Mohabat Ke Asar So" and so on. • However,owing to her older style of singing and limited vocal range, she found it difficult to compete with the rising singing stars, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. • So how did she re-invent herself ?

  35. as Tun Tun ! • Naushad suggested that she take up acting, because she had a very bubbly personality and wonderful comic timing. • He asked his friend Dilip Kumar to cast her in one of his films, and she appeared in Babul (1950) with him, which had Nargis as the lead actress. • Dilip Kumar renamed her as 'Tun Tun' to suit her comic persona, and the name stayed with her, and 'first woman comedienne of Hindi cinema' was born.

GQ10 • The clip from is a 1975 movie X supposedly based on Y's life,but in reality, it was inspired by Tarkeshwari Sinha, apart from Y. • Some say it was inspired by the life of Nandini Satpathy. • Nandini Satpathy was an Indian politician and author, and former CM of Orissa. • Tarkeshwari Sinha was an Indian politician from Bihar and the first female Deputy Finance Minister in the union cabinet led by prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru from 1958-64. • X was directed by Z. • The movie is noted for its songs composed by Rahul Dev Burman, written by Z and sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. • X,Y and Z ?
