What the NUT wanted to know • The factors influencing NQTs’ decision to join, or not to join, a teacher trade union • The factors influencing their choice of union • Their perceptions about NUT policies, services and benefits
1,493 questionnaires were returned • 95% were union members • 77% female • 51% under 26 • 92% “white” • 96% full time • 59% worked in secondary schools and 38% in primaries • 20% had “caring commitments”
Top five influences on joining NUT • I knew someone else who is a member • It is the most evident union at my school • Better impression of it from other teachers • More impressed with recruitment materials/message • Anticipated more personal support
Net satisfaction with benefits/services • Student materials • NQT materials • Members’ magazine • Website • Financial benefits • Legal services • Support from reps • Support from officials
