  1. Adding Linear Expressions

  2. When adding expressions, we can rewrite the problem by lining up the like terms vertically. Ex. 1) Simplify. (-3x + 7) + (6x + -8) -3x + 7 + 6x + -8 Rewrite vertically with like terms in columns. 3x + -1 3x – 1 Combine columns.

  3. Ex. 2) Simplify. (7x – 2y + 3) + (-2x + -y – 8) 7x + -2y + 3 + -2x + -1y + -8 Rewrite vertically with like terms in columns. 5x + -3y + -5 5x – 3y – 5 Combine columns.

  4. Ex. 3) What is the sum of (-6x + 7z) and (4x – 5z)? (-6x + 7z) + (4x – 5z) “Sum” means addition. -6x + 7z + 4x + -5z Rewrite vertically with like terms in columns. -2x + 2z Combine columns.

  5. Ex. 4) Simplify. Rewrite vertically with like terms in columns. = Get common denominators before adding fractions. Combine columns and simplify.
