Imagery • Using sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, feelings to describe something in more detail. • Ex. My father lies blue and ice cold beneath his snow white sheets. His hands are the rough texture of sandpaper. The frosted winter is harsh.
Onomatopoeia • Using sounds as words; “pow” “zoom” “crunch” “weeeeee” “buzz” “boom” • Ex. The swamp frogs croaked in unison • Ex. The flag flapped in wind • Ex. The sheep went, “Baa.”
Metaphor • Definition: says that one thing is another different thing. The simplest form of metaphor is: "The [first thing] is a [second thing].” • Ex. Her home was a prison • Ex. George is a sheep
Simile • Definition: says that one thing is like another different thing; Using the words as...as and like. • Ex. These cookies taste like garbage. • Ex. He eats like a pig. • Ex. It felt as hard as rock.
Hyperbole • Definition: uses an exaggerated or extravagant statement to create a strong emotional response. • Ex. Her brain is the size of a pea • Ex. He is older than dirt • Ex. I am so hungry I could eat a horse
Personification • Definition: giving human traits (qualities, feelings, action, or characteristics) to non-living objects (things, colors, qualities, or ideas). • Ex. The washing machine hummed a merry tune while it worked. • Ex. The window winked at me.
Alliteration • Definition: The repetition of an initial consonant sound • Sally sells seashells by the seashore • Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, Where's the peck of pickled peppers that Peter Piper picked?
