  1. DO NOW….or suffer the wrath of Dora the Explorer Do you remember how Americans felt after the Attacks on September 11th? Discuss this quietly with the person next to you.

  2. UNITY AND SECTIONALISM • Era of good feelings • War of 1812 left U.S. feeling united, proud and patriotic • Elections of 1816 and 1820 James Monroe wins easily

  3. Sectionalism in the American System • Sectionalism- having more loyalty to your region than to your country. Americans begin to think of themselves as Southerners, Westerners, or Northerners rather than Americans. This ends cooperation.

  4. Southerners -support slavery and states rights (idea that states are more important than than the federal government) and anti-tariff • Northerners- against slavery and belief in states rights. Pro tariff

  5. The Missouri Compromise • Missouri wants to become a state, but will they be a free or a slave state? • U.S. wants to maintain balance of slave states.

  6. 1820 Henry Clay- said: -Missouri would be a slave state • Maine would become a free state • New land from Louisiana Purchase north of Missouri would be free land and below the Missouri line would be slave land

  7. Gibbons v. Ogden • Supreme Court rules states can’t make laws that interfere with national laws • People see this as taking away from states rights and strengthening the national government

  8. Relations with Spain • US claims west part of Florida was part of Louisiana Purchase. Spain protest but does nothing

  9. Seminole Raids- Andrew Jackson fears Seminole Indians are allowing runaway slaves to live with them in east Florida. • Attacks without permission of Govt. • This land was owned by Spain

  10. Adams- Onis Treaty 1819: Secretary of State John Quincy Adams gets all of Florida from Spain and Spain gets some U.S. land claims in Texas. • Mexico declares independence in 1821 from Spain……..soooo….we win lol!!!

  11. Monroe Doctrine • Spanish Empire in South America crumbles- Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia and Ecuador all declare independence

  12. U.S. doesn’t want European countries to take over the new lands because we want to trade with them. • Monroe Doctrine of 1823 says no European colonies can be created • Its illegal to do this but we do anyway • No way of enforcement unless britian helps so we promise them some trade rights. • Very successful policy, sets standards for U.S. policy- policing!!!
