Swords and knives • Light artillery saber issued by mounted artillery. • The bowie knife was carried instead of a bayonet. • The bayonet was a large double bladed knife that was mounted on the front of the gun. • The Mameluke sword was carried by Marine officers.
Handguns • The Colt Army model 1860 was the most popular handgun in the Union and it was a .44 caliber 7 shot revolver. • The most common handgun for the Confederacy was the Colt 1851 revolver. • The shots ranged from 1 to 8 shots. • They had black powder pistols and revolvers.
Rifles • Most common were black powder flintlock but also had a few bolt actions and some lever actions. • Springfield model 1861 was the most common shoulder weapon in the civil war, favored for its range, accuracy, and reliability. • Second most widely used rifle was the Pattern 1853 Enfield. • Fayetteville rifle was the confederate copy of the Springfield.
Rifles Continued • They had revolving rifles like their pistols, they could hold from 5 to 8 shots. • They also had 12 gauge shot guns that were hammer and lever actions, but they were not common because they had low range. • The Henry rifle was the first lever action and was highly priced weapon and secretly bought. • The Spencer repeating rifle was a clip fed lever action that was replaced by the muzzle loading rifle muskets.

Cannons • Takes several men to work one. • Every 100 men there were 6 cannons. • 4 types of cannon balls solid shot was used against enemy artillery, canisters which was a tin can filled with small iron, case and shell which were hollow balls filled with black powder. • About 10% of casualties came from cannons.
Grenades • Ketchum grenade was the grenade of the civil war. • It had a plunger that would blow up on impact. • Confederates used a round hand grenade that weighed about 6 pounds.
Rapid fire guns • The Gatling gun and the .58 caliber were capable of firing 300 rounds per minute. Invented by Richard Jordan Gatling. • Similar guns were J.D Mills coffee mill gun mills were hand cranked, and the Billinghurst Requa Battery.
