Is it a straightforward proposition to begin to include DR and smart grid-based components into existing programs? What are Maryland’s existing EE and DR programs? How will smart meters impact these programs?
EmPOWER Maryland Act of 2008 • 15% reduction in per capita electricity consumption and 15% reduction in per capita peak demand by 2015, compared to 2007 levels. • EmPOWER MD Utilities have spent over $729 million on the EmPOWER Maryland programs (2012). • approximately $380 million on EE&C programs and $349 million on DR programs. • To date, the utilities’ EmPOWER Maryland programs have saved a total of 2,249,566 megawatt hours (“MWh”) and 1,070 megawatts (“MW”).
August 2010: Pepco and BGE Initiate AMI Programs • Ongoing Smart Grid EE Programs: • Conservation Voltage Reduction • Ongoing Smart Grid DR Programs: • Peak Demand Reduction Days • BGE Smart Energy Rewards • Pepco Peak Savings Days • Both programs offer $1.25 per kWh reduced over baseline use • Both programs are voluntary and all customers are opted-in • Ongoing Smart Grid Energy Conservation Programs: • Home Energy Reports
Smart meters can be effective at reducing peak demand • Dynamic Pricing • Smart appliances • Voluntary energy reductions on high demand days • Smart meters can be effective at promoting energy conservation • Information to the end user • Web based reports • In home monitors • “Nest” type technologies • Remotely control energy use • Now we are looking at ways to integrate smart grid into our EmPOWER programs
