  1. Sustainability is Good for Business PURCHASING

  2. Introduction • Our customers are looking for accommodation that is working to improve its sustainability and reduce negative environmental impact • The hotel is making efforts to reduce its water and energy consumption and to minimise the production of waste • All departments are able to contribute to this effort

  3. Purchasing – Energy Reduction • Invest in energy efficient lamps – CFLS and LEDs in place of tungsten • These not only use significantly less energy then incandescent lamps but last much longer (reducing maintenance) and don’t give out so much heat (reducing air conditioning load). • When purchasing new equipment, investigate low energy alternatives. • A higher cost price is often quickly offset by lower running costs

  4. Purchasing – Water Reduction • Buy low flow shower heads, tap aerators and flow restrictors to limit water use in guest rooms • When updating toilets, purchase ones with a dual flush mechanism • Invest in installing rain water collection systems for watering grounds

  5. Purchasing– Waste Minimisation • Source goods from retailers whose product comes in reusable containers • Use local suppliers where possible • Purchase goods in bulk to reduce the amount of packaging • Buy cleaning solutions in concentrated form • Avoid purchasing single-use disposable items • Take longevity into account when making purchasing decisions • Where possible reduce the need for plastic bags • Purchase cloth bags for linen collection • Bins that do not need plastic liners etc.

  6. Case Study - Cyprus • Ascos Beach Hotel, Paphos • Actions • Aimed to reduce plastic waste across the hotel • Purchased 3000 durable plastic cups (at a cost of €867 ) • Stopped using a bin liner in guest room bins, only in bathroom bins • Impacts • 100,000 fewer plastic cups disposed of than in the previous year –saving of almost €2000, therefore paying off the investment in a matter of months • Purchased 50% fewer bin liners, saving over €300 • A survey of over 100 guests showed that no one found that the project had a negative impact on their holiday experience

  7. Action Planning • Discuss what options there are for reducing energy, water and waste in your operations • create a list of potential actions • who needs to be involved to ensure that these actions can take place? • how quickly do you anticipate these actions being put into place? • will any further training be required?
