  2. Project Background Funded by: Shell Foundation Implemented by: China Association of Rural Energy Industry (CAREI) Centre for Entrepreneurship in International Health and Development (CEIHD), University of California, Berkeley Project duration: 2005.6-2007 .1 Project fund: US$30,0000

  3. Project Objectives • To promote the development and innovation of biomass stove enterprises in China • To reduce indoor air pollution and improve users’ health and life quality • To boost international communication by propagandizing innovative household biomass technologies and products in other developing countries.

  4. Project Phases Phase I : Taken charge by CAREI draft a set of criteria for the evaluation on technology innovation; Phase II: Taken charge by CAREI focus on the selection and award to the winner products; Phase III: Taken charge by CEIHD promote the prized stoves to other countries.

  5. Phase I • Activity 1.1 Set up project management organization • Establishment of Project Steering Committee and PMO • Recruit technical expert team for examination and evaluation Activity 1.2 Identify and select the evaluation criteria and evaluation of testing institution • Review report on the biomass stove testing standards in China and abroad • Investigation and evaluation report on the testing institution • Criteria selection Activity 1.3 Design the application form and procedure • Application forms and procedure

  6. Testing Center visiting and checking by experts from CAREI and CEIHDBeijing Enviro-Tech Dedusting Equipment Testing Center(BEDETC). Criteria finalizing by three sidesUniversity of California, Berkeley

Phase II • Activity 2.1 Application and preliminary evaluation • Activity 2.2 Site visit to products and the manufactures • Activity 2.3 Evaluation of the applications • Activity 2.4 Approval of the winner list • Activity 2.5 Award ceremony meeting • Activity 2.6 Publicity and dissemination in China • Activity 2.7 Take part in discussion about CEIHD’s activities

Applications Scanning • Questionnaires were sent out to 46 stove manufacturers • 19 manufacturers submitted their answered questionnaires and applications. • 10 applicants passed the qualification examination and pre-evaluation.
