1880s 1894 1901 1904 Joseph Boyer, a recycler of building materials, invented the first practical air-powered chipping hammer J.W. Duntley, a foundry foreman, realised the potential of the Boyer hammer and founded Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. Backed by Charles M. Schwab, president of U.S.Steel, Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. was formally incorporated A line of rotary air tools and hoists was commenced in Cleveland with percussion type tools built in Detroit
1904 1910 1914 1918 The first electric drill was patented Introduced the gasoline driven “Little Giant” truck CP was the world’s fourth largest manufacturer of commercial trucks (the Coca-Cola company was one of the largest users of the “Little Giant”) CP was listed on the New York Stock Exchange
1940 1943 Demand for air tools heightened as CP Impact Wrenches became a critical element in building much of the heavy equipment for WWII May 29, the Saturday Evening Post used a Norman Rockwell painting of “Rosie the Riveter” on the cover. The female aircraft worker was eating her lunch with a CP Riveting Hammer in her lap and her foot resting on the book, “Mein Kampf”, written by Hitler.
1949 1954 1964 1981 A new plant was built in Utica to cater for the increased demand Introduction of torque controlled tools for the automobile, appliance and electronics industry Introduction of the first “silenced” demolition tools Acquired a mobile distributor of automotive tools to expand their service to this industry
1987 1992 1997 1998 CP was purchased by Atlas Copco CP was divisionalised into 3 areas of focus; Automotive, Industrial and Construction Headquarters and manufacturing operations move to Rock Hill, South Carolina Chicago Pneumatic, Desoutter and Georges Renault form Alliance Tools Division within Atlas Copco
2001 2001 Alliance Tools renamed Chicago Pneumatic Division with each company logo now incorporating the CP circle On December 28, Chicago Pneumatic celebrated 100 years 2002 January 1, the Australian Sales Company incorporated the Desoutter business to form the Chicago Pneumatic Division from within Atlas Copco Tools
