What does it mean to categorize? Are there rules?
Simplify. 2/3 + 4/9 = 4/10 – 2/5 =
LT 2.1 A One-sTep Equations - Fractions • Review Box • Mixed Number • 1 ½ • It combines a regular number with a fraction • Improper Fraction • 3/2 • Fractions where the top number (numerator) is bigger than the bottom number (denominator)
Cont. Review Box • Convert Mixed Number to an Improper Fraction • Multiply the denominator by the “regular” number • Add the numerator to step 1 or the multiplication (denominator x “regular” number) • Put answer in numerator • Keep the denominator • Example: • 1 ½ 2 x 1 = 2, 2 + 1 = 3 3/2
Convert to improper fraction • 2 3/16 • 6 2/5
cont. review box • Convert Improper Fraction to a Mixed Number • Do long division • Divide the numerator by the • denominator • Your answer is the “regular” • number • The remainder is the numerator of the fraction, the denominator stays the same • Example: • 45/4 Fraction is division!
Convert to Mixed Number • 16/5 • 9/2
Adding & Subtracting Fractions with like denominators • You ONLY add/subtract the numerators • The denominators stays the same
Adding & Subtracting Fractions with unlike denominators • You must have “common” (the same) denominators. • Once you have the same denominator, you can add/subtract the fractions. • You ONLY add/subtract the numerators • The denominators stays the same
How Can you Find the common denominator? How Do you change a fraction to have a new denominator?
