Famous events on the Steps: • 1939 Opera singer Marian Anderson sang to 75,000 people because the DAR refused to allow her to sing in Constitution Hall because she was black • Vietnam protests • Million Man March • Did You Know? • Beneath the Memorial is a Museum • The Reflecting pool is at the bottom of the steps

Korean War Memorial • Includes a 164 foot mural etched with 2,500 pictures • Included an inscription “Freedom is not Free” • On reflection from the walls, there are 38 soldiers representing the 38th parallel, which divides Korea • Next to the “Pool of Remembrance” the number of American and United Nation’s soldiers killed, wounded, missing in action, and held as prisoners of war are listed

  6. World War II Memorial • Quick Facts • 2 arches stand for the Atlantic and Pacific regions. Within each arch are 4 eagles holding a laurel wreath as a symbol of victory in WW II • 24 bronze panels line the entrance and show what jobs people did to help win the war • The “Freedom Wall” honors the 400,000 Americans who died. It has 4,000 gold stars; each star represents 100 of those who died. The wall is 85 feet long. This is also called the “Sacred Area” • 56 pillars represent the 48 states, 7 territories and D.C. Each pillar has the name of the state or territory with Bronze oak and Wheat Wreaths (symbol of peace). A hole in the middle of each pillar represents the lives lost in the war • Rainbow Pool is at the center

Washington Monument • Is the tallest monument building in DC • The Construction of this monument stopped right before the civil war • The lower 1/3 of the monument is a different color • It was actually the tallest building in the world until 1889 • The same shovel was used to put in the first corner stone of the Washington monument as when George Washington used for the first corner stone of the capital. • The marble is mostly from Maryland • *Total cost of building the monument was $1,817,710 • the walls are 15' thick at the bottom and 18" at the top sponsored by target total amount of blocks is 36,491 and weighs 90,854 tons that's equivalent to the weight of 181,708 horses

  8. The Vietnam Wall • One of three memorials to those who served in the Vietnam War • There are three sets of fathers and sons on the Wall • 31 sets of brothers are on the Wall

Jefferson Memorial • The total cost of the monument was a little over $3 million • The memorial was dedicated in 1943 on the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth • The steps leading up to the building are made of pure marble • The design of the Jefferson memorial is similar to Monticello - Thomas Jefferson's home, which was modeled partially after the Pantheon in Rome

  11. FDR Memorial • It took 20 years to create definite plans • Memorial sits on Cherry Tree Walk • Consists of four outdoor rooms • Quotes by the President cover the walls • Much of the museum was built with Red Granite

  12. Iwo Jima Memorial • Located near Arlington cemetery • Inspired by a photograph • Figures are 32 feet tall • Flag pole is 60 feet tall

  13. Arlington National Cemetery • Divided into 70 sections • President Kennedy burial location • Tomb of the unknown soldiers

  14. Capitol Building • Building contains 540 rooms over 5 floors • The Capitol has its own subway • There is a large statue on top • The Capital building and the statue on top face away from the other buildings on the Washington mall

  15. White House • Official residence of every President except George Washington • Originally named “President’s Palace” • Garden around the White House was planted by John Adams • Tours were suspended after the September 11th terrorist attack

Gettysburg • Gettysburg was the site of one of the largest battles of the American Civil War • 120 generals present at Gettysburg, nine were killed or mortally wounded during the battle • The Battle of Gettysburg is the costliest battle of the Civil War • There are more than 1,400 monuments, markers and tablets at Gettysburg • It did not rain during the battle, but the next day it poured
