DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF MFD PhD Course in Engineering Design Research 26 – 31 August 2001, Magdeburg, Germany • Ing. Ctibor Štádler, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen • Faculty of Mechanical Engineering • Department of Machine Design • P.O. Box 314, Univerzitní 8 • 306 14 Pilsen, CZECH REPUBLIC • Telephone: +420-19-7491556, Telefax: +420-19-7423185 • E-mail: stadler@kks.zcu.cz, • www: home.zcu.cz/~stadler, www.kks.zcu.cz, www.zcu.cz Research Topic Research topic of my Ph.D. thesis is focused on the “Development and Applications of the Method MFD (Modular Function Deployment) for Increasing the Competitiveness of Machine Tools”. Research Questions 1. What is the lack in the current MFD approach ? 2. How the MFD method could be advanced ? 3. How can I use computer aid for MFD method ? 4. How can I verify (apply) results of the advanced MFD method ? Necessary Theories 1. Theory of Structures, Properties, and Quality of Technical Systems (TS) 2. Design for Properties (DFX) 3. General Procedural Model of the Design Process Approach In general there are three levels of knowledge support of engineering design process (intuitive, methodical and systematic one). The intuitive approach: We have “no” theories, “no” methods, only previously acquired general and specialized knowledge and practical experience. In this case e.g. the scope of considered properties of the TS depends only on intuitive decisions of engineering designers. The methodical approach: We have prescriptive and normative instructions, which restrict space for creative design process, e.g. BS 2000, VDI 2221. According to my analyses MFD exists up to now on this level. The systematic approach: We have system of pieces of knowledge and their relations, which enables to manage and optimally support creative design process. I plan to advance MFD to this level with use of the above mentioned theories. In the area of computer support my goal is development of a program, which will guide engineering designer through procedural phases of design process and help him to solve these phases more systematically, flexibly and effectively. I will verify the advanced MFD method in the area of frames for machine tools. I will focus on development and evaluation of their optimal modules.
