Density Video! • http://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/measuringmatter/
What Does It Mean? • D=m/v • What is density? • A measure of how much mass located in a specific volume of space • What is mass? • How much matter is in an object • What is volume? • Amount of space occupied by an object
Procedures • 1. Find a partner • 2. With the materials at your desk, modify the three film canisters so: • 1 floats (Canister 1) • 1 remains suspended (Canister 2) • 1 sinks to the bottom (Canister 3) • Find the mass and volume of each canister • Record data in Table 1 • Calculate density of each canister using formula D=m/v
RERUN • -Recall (summarize our lab activity) • -Explain (explain purpose of lab) • -Results (describe results of lab and what they mean) • -Uncertainties (describe what you are still unsure about) • -New Learnings (write 2 new things you learned!)

Density, Mass, Volume • Density • Ameasure of how much mass located in a specific volume of space • Volume • Amount of space occupied by an object • Mass • How much matter is in an object
Explain • 1. Mass of empty film canister? • 2. Did the mass of canister change? • 3. Did the volume of canister change? • 4. What caused each canister to stay at their level in the water? • What caused the canisters to float? • What caused the canisters to sink? • What caused the canister to sink? • 5. What have you learned?
Rainbow Density Experiment! • What do you think will happen? • Why? • Will all the colors mix together? Why or why not? • Which is the densest? • Which is least dense?
