Crankshaft, p. 15, ex.2 • Mainjournals– serve as the points of support and as the center of rotation for the shaft • Cranks – provide points of attachment for the connecting rods • Counterweights – balance the offcenter weight of the individual crank throws

Crankshaft, p. 17, ex. 8 • Linear motion – rotation (function) • Connected to the propeller shaft (provides rotation to the propeller) • Strong (not bend), and flexible (sag, hog with the ship) • Made from alloy steel and is hollow – drilled passages (weight, torque, lubrication) • Is supported by main bearings • Counterweights – to balance centrifugal forces
Connecting rod, p. 18, ex. 1 • The connecting rod connects … the piston to the crankshaft. • The connecting rod is fastened to the piston at its little end by a … gudgeon pin/piston pin. • The big end of the connecting rod … has a detachable cap. • The big end of the connecting rod is attached to the crankshaft at … the crankpin journal. • In order to endure the stresses, the connecting rods must be … very strong and rigid and as light as possible.

Connecting rod, p. 20, ex. 5 • The connecting rod translates the linear motion of the piston into the rotating motion of the crankshaft. • The connecting rod serves to carry lubricating oil from the shaft to the piston and has drillings along its length. • The method of mounting of the connecting rod affects its design. / The design of the connecting rod is affected by the method of mounting.
