    1. How MUN Models the UN The application of the UNs structure to Model United Nations Conferences

    2. Precedence of Commonly Represented Committees Security Council; ECOSOC; DISEC; ECOFIN; SOCHUM; SPECPOL; Administrative and Budgetary; Legal.

    3. Security Council (SecCo) Under the Charter, the functions and powers of the Security Council are: to maintain international peace and security in accordance with the principles and purposes of the United Nations; to investigate any dispute or situation which might lead to international friction; to recommend methods of adjusting such disputes or the terms of settlement; to formulate plans for the establishment of a system to regulate armaments; to determine the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression and to recommend what action should be taken; to call on Members to apply economic sanctions and other measures not involving the use of force to prevent or stop aggression; to take military action against an aggressor; to recommend the admission of new Members; to exercise the trusteeship functions of the United Nations in "strategic areas"; to recommend to the General Assembly the appointment of the Secretary-General and, together with the Assembly, to elect the Judges of the International Court of Justice. There are 15 members of the Security Council. http://www.un.org/Docs/sc/unsc_functions.html

    4. Security Council (SecCo) The Security Council in the MUNiverse: The Security Council operates autonomously of other committees EXCEPT on issues referred to it by other bodies; The Security Council is the only committee that can authorize the use of force or to impose sanctions; The Security Council is the only committee that can recognize creation of new nations (Samoa-Djibouti); Generally, the Security Council is a Crisis Committee at MUN Conferences.

    5. Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Under the Charter, the functions and powers of ECOSOC are: To promote higher standards of living; To promote full employment; To promote social and economic progress; To identify solutions to international economic, social, and health problems; To facilitate international cultural and educational cooperation; To encourage universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; To receive reports from 11 UN funds and programs; To issue policy recommendations to the UN system and Member States. There are 54 members of ECOSOC. http://www.un.org/esa/coordination/ecosoc/about.htm

    6. General Assembly (GA) The General Assembly is the main body of the United Nations; each member nation is represented in the GA (but with no more than five representatives at one time); The remaining committees are General Assembly committees, with two additions; The duties/powers of the GA are outlined in Articles 9 22 of the UN Charter; Unless otherwise noted, all member nations are represented equally on each of the GA committees.

    7. General Assembly (Continued) General Assembly Plenary: A meeting of the entire body of nations of the world; Location where voting on draft resolutions from all GA committees takes place; Some (few) issues are brought to debate during plenary; Emergency meetings of the plenary can be called by the Security Council or a majority of GA Members; Assembly holds a general debate where the GA is addressed by the heads of state and government, followed by discussion of the most pressing international issues. GA in the MUNiverse: Not reproduced at MUN conferences (not enough time); All votes on resolutions are taken in committees; All debates take place during committees.

    8. General Assembly (GA) Credentials Committee: Nine members appointed at the start of each session; Confirms and reports to the GA Plenary on the credentials of each countrys representatives. CC in the MUNiverse: NEVER represented; Would you want to sit and research the other delegates for three days? Didnt think so

    9. Disarmament & International Security (DISEC) Under the Charter, the GA must: Consider and make recommendations on the principles of cooperation in the maintenance of international peace and security, including the principles governing disarmament and arms regulation; Discuss any question relating to international peace and security and, except where a dispute or situation is being discussed by the Security Council, to make recommendations on it. DISECs role is to fulfill these parts of the GAs mission, providing debate and resolutions for the plenary to vote on regarding these topics. DISEC in the MUNiverse: Though this committee is meant to deal with a broad spectrum of issues pertaining to political and security questions, it tends to focus mainly on disarmament-related issues. Convinced that there are symbiotic relations between international peace and security and reduction of arms, the First Committee places very high priority on disarmament and non-use of force, both nuclear and conventional. However, in recent years, the First Committee topics have taken on an added dimension, including conflict resolution between the developed and the developing nations.

    10. Economic & Financial (ECOFIN) Under the Charter, the GA must: Initiate studies and make recommendations to promote international collaboration in economic fields. ECOFIN in the MUNiverse: This committee deals with problems and issues implied by its name; It focuses on such issues as: global economic development; the transfer of technology between industrialized and nonindustrialized nations; the sustainable use of resources on a global basis; crucial matters that decisively affect international trade and finance, such as: the international debt crisis; global trade blocs.

    11. Social, Humanitarian & Cultural (SOCHUM) Under the Charter, the GA must: Initiate studies and make recommendations to promote the realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, and international collaboration in social, cultural, educational and health fields. SOCHUM in the MUNiverse: The primary concern of this committee is to promote social progress in all human endeavors on a global basis; This committee focuses on such issues as: Transnational cultural and educational cooperation; Promoting universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all -without distinction as to race, sex, or religion.

    12. Special Political & Decolonization (SPECPOL) Under the Charter, the GA must: Initiate studies and make recommendations to promote international political cooperation. Originally formed in 1947 as an ad-hoc committee to relieve DISEC of its workload; Made permanent in 1957; SPECPOL in the MUNiverse: This committee is tasked with addressing those political issues that threaten global peace, such as: The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait; The Arab-Israeli Conflict; The crisis in the Balkans.

    13. Administrative and Budgetary Under the Charter, the GA must: to consider and approve the United Nations budget and to apportion the contributions among Members; Administrative and Budgetary in the MUNiverse: Doesnt exist; Again, who wants to sit and plan budgets for a fictional body?

    14. Legal Under the Charter, the GA must: Initiate studies and make recommendations to promote the development and codification of international law; Legal in the MUNiverse: This committee is concerned with agenda topics dealing with international legal questions; This committee depends on the International Law Commission for the technical formation of international law (not represented at MUN conferences).
