  2. 1940, Disgruntled members of IRGUN  LEHI • Raison D’etre = drive away the British • Founder = Avraham Stern (Stern Gang) • Pissed off about strict immigration quotas

  3. LEHI’s objectives • Take over historic Eretz Israel • Bring together fans of active struggle (aka violent resistance) • Be recognized as only legit Jewish military force

  4. Referred to themselves as terrorists; controversially used Torah as justification for violence • BUT • Didn’t manage to become a homogenous organization; no single ideology (though often categorized as far-right, even fascist)

  5. In the beginning • Almost all were professionally trained (It + Poland) • BUT, quite unsuccessful (swaying J public opinion against them • Attacked Jews who cooperated with Arabs • Stern killed in 1942

  6. Then • Stuff started hitting the fan (responsible for 42 political assassinations) • Rather than robberies, began to be financed through private donations
