Hughes’ Thesis “ I was saved from sin when I was going on thirteen. But not really saved.”
Why is Hughes’ message important to me? This story is important to me because it is relatable. It reminds me of certain obstacles I was faced with in life when I was a disbeliver too. However, I overcame them.
Ending Remarks There were a few things that I disliked after reading the selection: • Westley’s swearing in church • Langston’s lie—the fact that he was afraid to tell his aunt and uncle he did not “see” Jesus as he should have. Apparently, children back in Hughes’ era did not question their parents or their elders, unlike children today who constantly challenge and rebel when they can’t get their own way. Overall, the story was interesting and realistic. It made me realize how a little lie can escalate into a mountain of disbelief. It also shows that many 13-year old children today may feel the same pressure as Hughes did, and they may also “be saved” just to please their parents.
