Cell Division • Most body cells divide to increase their number through a process of mitosis, which results in two daughter cells with identical sets of chromosomes. • The cell starts with 46 chromosomes and ends with the same number of chromosomes. • A chromosome is a structure made of DNA and protein in the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell.
The Cell Cycle • Has three stages: • -interphase • - mitosis • -cytokinesis
1st stage: Interphase • Longest stage in the cell cycle • cell grows and develops • Toward the end, DNA doubles (chromosomes, double) • Also called G1, S, G2
2nd stage Mitosis • The second stage of the cell cycle has four phases • -prophase • -metaphase • -anaphase • -telophase Also called M phase
More details • Prophase -chromosomes are visible -nuclear membrane disappears -nucleolus disappears
Metaphase • - chromosomes line upacross center • -spindle fibers attach to center of chromosomes
Anaphase • -chromosomes split • - each half is pulled to opposite side of the cell.
Telophase • Chromosomes cluster in the center of each new cell. • Nuclear membrane begins to form • Cells begin to separate • End of mitosis
3rd stage Cytokinesis • Last stage of cell division • -cytoplasm divides • -two daughter cells form • -same number of chromosomes as parent cell. Also called C phase
