  2. Early small engine applications included fruit gathering machines, lawn mowers, and garden cultivators.

  3. Briggs & Stratton developed several designs of small engines, with the design of the Model P engine being the earliest and most common design.

  4. Early consumer equipment powered by small engines included the portable battery charger, refrigerator, and portable electric generator.

  5. The popularity of small-engine-powered clothes washing machines opened the market for consumer use of outdoor power equipment.

  6. A small air-cooled gasoline engine was added to the original design of the push reel lawn mower to reduce operator fatigue and increase lawn cutting production.

  7. The demand for lawn mowers and lawn and garden tractors led to the development of additional OPE such as string trimmers, leaf blowers, snow throwers, and pressure washers.

  8. Early Briggs and Stratton aluminum engines were produced in the 1950s and mainly used to reduce the weight of rotary lawn mower engines.

  9. Lawn and garden tractors were originally developed to mow acreage and large lawns.
