fats • Source of energy • Helps the body grow and develop • Three types of fats -saturated (examples: meat, dairy, and oils) -unsaturated( oils, and meats) -Trans( mostly butter) • helps the brain and nervous system • Covers organs • People should get 30% of calories from fat • insulates the body
protein • building blocks to make muscle or skin or bones. • molecule made of hydrogen and carbon atoms • Make enzymes • Two types -animal protein -vegetable protein • Helps red blood cells carry oxygen • foods that have protein: meat, and dairy • ¼ of a persons meal should be of protein
Vitamins • Helps grow and maintain body functions • two types of vitamins: fat soluble, water soluble • Water soluble found in: - Citrus fruits, and vegetables • Fat soluble found in: -vitamins such as a,e,kd • vitamin D in milk helps your bones. • Vitamin A in carrots helps you see at night. • Vitamin C in oranges helps your body heal if you get a cut. • B vitamins in leafy green vegetables help your body make protein and energy.
minerals • helps transmit nerves • Maintains normal body functions • 2 types -macro minerals -trace minerals • Maintains normal heartbeat • Calcium is the top macro mineral thus minerals develop strong bones • trace minerals include magnesium , zinc, fluoride, ect… • Macro minerals consist of calcium, sodium, potassium, chloride, sulphur
Fibre • Two types • -soluble • -insoluble • Prevents despises and diabetes • Helps the body feel full • Fibre are carbs that can’t be digested • good for the digestive system. • lower blood cholesterol and help control blood sugar levels
water • Transports nutrients • Controls the body temperature • Helps control chemical reactions in the body • Helps the immune system • Mandatory to live
