  1. Start of World War II 8th Grade Social Studies

  2. What do we know about WWII? • Answer the following questions to the best of your ability with a partner: • Where was WWII fought? • Why was the War fought? • Who was on each side? • Who were the U.S.’s allies? Enemies? • What was the fighting/violence like? • Why was this war called a “world war”?

  3. Germany: Hitler • Gained power in Germany in 1933 • Promised to rebuilt strength of Deutschland • Offered solutions • Blame Jews • Rebuild military • Started National Socialist Workers Party (NAZIs)

  4. Discussion Look at the following cartoon and discuss with a partner what you think it means?

  5. Appeasement • In WWI, Germany lost much territory • Was denied large military • To protect France • Hitler begun rebuilding army, navy, air force • Began taking control of countries surrounding it • Forcefully and peacefully • Remilitarized the Rhine

  6. Appeasement of Hitler

  7. Appeasement Definition: Making concessions to an enemy with the intention of avoiding conflict with that person Britain Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain appeased Hitler (gave him what he wanted) hoping that it would: make Hitler happy and keep peace in Europe

  8. Problem • You are Britain and France in 1938, Hitler has remilitarized and taken control of Austria and Sudetenland. These are all things that are supposedly illegal. What do you do? Hitler promises he is through, that he is just claiming territory that is rightfully German. You don’t want another war, what do you do?

  9. Appeasement • CRITICS OF THE APPEASEMENT WOULD ARGUE: • That a tougher line was needed with Germany. Appeasement allowed Hitler to become stronger. • The threat of military action should have been against Germany much earlier than 1939. • Perhaps if Hitler had been strongly challenged in 1936 during the Rhineland incident he might have pursued more peaceful methods. • The German people may even have voted him from power for risking another war • SUPPORTERS OF APPEASEMENT WOULD ARGUE: • If World War 2 had not broken out, the policy of • appeasement would be seen as successful. • Preventing a second world war was a noble and • admirable course of action. • It was the only course of action open to Britain. A Good or Bad Policy? Create a chart that shows the thoughts of the supporters and critics of appeasement.

  10. Appeasement • Hitler then takes all of Czechoslovakia • Czechs up in arms! • Allies do nothing • Munich Conference 1938 • Allies tell Hitler, if you stop now we won’t bother you • British Prime Minister, “Peace for our time” • April 1938

  11. Invasion of Poland • Sept. 1, 1939 • Germany launched attack into Poland • Reconnect two parts of Germany • Agreement with Soviet Union • “Blitzkrieg” • Poland is no match for Wehrmacht Safari Video: World War II, Chapter 2

  12. Questions: • Why do you think Hitler and the Nazis invaded Poland? • From the picture on the previous page, how did the German conquers treat the Polish? • If you were Britain or France, how do you respond?

  13. Reaction • Britain and France would not stand for any more German aggressions • Both declared war on Germany • Soviet Union invaded Eastern Poland • “blitzkrieg” warfare quickly overwhelms much of Europe • Denmark, Norway, Poland, Holland, etc.

  14. Japan • Began aggressive expansion across Asian/Pacific in early 1900s • Attacked Korea and Manchuria • In 1931, directly attacked China • Quickly overrun • Later attack French, British, and Dutch colonies • Ally with Germany

  15. American Reaction • Supports China • Japan is increasingly threatening • Stories of atrocities by Japan come to surface • Killing civilians • Mass executions • Destruction of Naking • U.S. cuts off trade with Japan
