Facts on Literacy • Before third grade, kids learn how to read. After third grade, kids read to learn. • The average child in a low-income family hears about 33% to 50% as many words as children in higher-income families. • By age 6, the child of the low-income family knows about 3,000 wordscompared to 20,000 for those in higher-income families. • In California only 24% of fourth graders are reading proficiently. Research shows that 74% students who are behind will never catch up. • Time spent reading is the key. No substitute for raw time.

What does a Community Reader do? • 30 minute scripted program • Twice a week • No experience necessary • Training is provided • Staff will always be present

Who can be a Community Reader? • Business Leaders • Community members • Retirees • Church members • High School Students • You! • All Volunteers are screened: • TB test • Application • Fingerprinting • Volunteer applications can downloaded at fcusd.org or picked up at the district office
