HD-RADIO FIELD TRIALS IN VIETNAM Ahmed Nadeem ABU Technical Department ITU-ABU REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON DIGITAL RADIO IMPLEMENTATION FOR DEVELOPING BROADCASTERS 3 – 6 August 2009, Malaysia
HD-RADIO FIELD TRIALS IN VIETNAM - ABU Contents • ABU initiatives in the digital radio front • Project Objectives • Overwiew – HDRadio Technology • System setup and results • Short video on HDRadio
ABU INITIATIVES: DIGITAL RADIO • Close Cooperation with Digital Radio Technologies • The ABU Digital Radio Forum • The ABU DAB+ Task Force • DRM Trials • • DRM-ABU Bangkok 2004 • RNZ Wellington 2005 • VOV 2005 • AIR Delhi 2007 • HD-Radio Trial in Hanoi, Vietnam 2009
HD-RADIO TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP & FIELD MEASUREMENTS 10 – 13 Feb 2009, Hanoi Jointly organised by ABU, Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) and HDRadio developer iBiquity Digital and its industry partners Nautel, Sogitec and Audemat
PROJECT OBJECTIVES • To set up a showcase on HD-Radio and expose this to ABU broadcasters in the region • To enable them to understand implementation issues • To enable them to identify problem areas so as to help them in setting up their own HD-Radio services. • To demonstrate digital transmissions to radio set manufacturers / dealers and consumers
PROJECT OBJECTIVES • To kick-start receiver activity and listener activity in the service area and hopefully in other countries • To make sample measurements on actual field strength and coverage areas for possible use in other implementations • To demonstrate capability of simulcasting (using IBOC technology) of digital and analogue services • To impart training to ABU members
Programme outline & participants • 2 day Technology workshop • 2 day Field trial and measurements • Over 60 participants • Local broadcasters and industry • ABU members from the region, including South Korea, Laos, Brunei and Mongolia
What is HD Radio™ Technology? Overview – HDRadio Technology (1) • Enables Simultaneous Transmission of Analog and Digital Signals • Analog receivers continuetofunction as always • Digital receivers detectthe new signalstodeliver superior audio quality and new services. Analog AM or FM Signal DigitalCarriers DigitalCarriers
What is HD Radio™ Technology? Hybrid Mode Overview – HDRadio Technology (2) • Flexible Implementation Phases • Hybrid: Simulcast of Analog and Digital • All-Digital: Digital Broadcast Only All-Digital Mode
What is HD Radio™ Technology? FM Modes FM Hybrid FM All-Digital AM Hybrid AM All-Digital Overview – HDRadio Technology (3) AM Modes
System Setup • Tested on Newly commissioned Transmitters at VOV facility • Both 1KW transmitters in FM and AM • FM: • Primary Analogue Channel with HD-FM • 2 additional FM channels • AM: • Primary Analogue Channel with HD-AM
FM HD Radio Installation at VOV Ethernet & AES/EBU RF AES/EBU RF Audemat Digiplexer Processor Nautel Exporter Nautel M50 Exciter Nautel V1 1kW Tx Shively Antenna Generating HD1 Program 101.5 MHz 30M HAAT Feedline Loss: 1.4dB Ant gain: 3.22 dBd Ethernet RF Sample for Adaptive Pre-correction Nautel Importer Generating HD2 & HD3 Programs
FM HD-Radio Results • Both analogue FM and Digital FM was received fine • The additional 2 FM services also worked fine • The signal level in and around the city was very good
AM HD-Radio Installation at VOV Mag & Phase Ethernet & AES/EBU AES/EBU RF Audemat Digiplexer Processor Nautel Exporter Plus Nautel AM HD Exciter Nautel J1000 1kW Tx VOV Antenna 810 kHz AES/EBU CD Player
AM HD-Radio Results • The reception of both Analogue AM and Digital AM was poor at some parts • Specially inside the city center • The digital signal worked well where the analogue was received well
HD-Radio and IBOC Technology • Supports simulcast of analogue and digital service in the same Channel • Multiple services in the same channel • This provides the opportunity to introduce digital radio services without interrupting the analogue service • Seamless transition • No additional spectrum requirement • Implementation and additional infrastructure requirement is minimal
