  2. Reality: Between 1865 and 1890, the frontier grew at unprecedented rates, thus bringing about widespread environmental degradation. The white population in the west increased 5 times faster than then rest of the nation. The number of American farms doubled. The output of cattle, hogs, and hay more than doubled. The production of corn, wheat, and oats nearly tripled. 5 transcontinental railroads were built with 72,473 miles of track.
