Description • The cave salamander is 4-6 inches long. It is either bright orange or yellow with black spots. Their stomachs are either white or yellow. They enjoy the twilight limestone caves as their homes near all around cold springs in the forested areas.
Population • In Kansas there are about 900 cave salamanders.
Habitat • The Cave Salamanders live in dark limestone caves. They live near cold year round springs, in forested areas. They may also live under fallen leaves and forest debris, they live mostly in Cherokee county in Kansas, the Ozark plateau.
Food web • The cave Salamander eats herbivores, omnivores, and insects. • The cave Salamander gets eaten by Cray fish and cavefish.
Why is this creature endangered and when did it happen. • The Cave Salamander went endangered on March 18th, 2010 • Why did it become endangered? It got eaten a lot by many hungry predators. predator
Biotic Potential • Life span- is 4 to 5 years • They lay 50-90 eggs a year • They reproduce yearly
Reasons • Over predation. • They lay to many eggs and only a few survive. • They spend the first 1-2 years in the water, which give fish a chance to eat them. • They have bright colors, that makes them stand out more in their surroundings.
Recovery plan • The Recovery plan for the Cave Salamander is to raise some of the offspring in a controlled environment. Then when they mature set them free in the wild with tags/chips in them so that the people who raised them can track where they go and how high the number of predators are.
