2nd Woe (6th Trumpet) Not Yet Complete The 2nd woe is ongoing as we enter the 10th chapter of Revelation It is not until chapter 11, verse 14 that the 2nd woe passes: The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly. Revelation 11:14
Today’s Coverage… • Chapter 10 • The “Little Book” • The Seven Thunders • Chapter 11 • The Temple • The Two Witnesses
And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire: • This is the 3rd appearance of a distinctive messenger: • Holding back judgments for a special work of grace 7:2 • Messenger of the covenant, pouring fire of judgment 8:5 • Here 10:1 Revelation 10:1
Messiah? • Clouds Ex 16:10; 19:9;24:15ff; 34:5; Ps 97:2; 104:3; Dan 7:13; Mt 17; 24:30; Luke 21:27; Acts 1:9; Rev 1:7 • Rainbow Psalm 89:1,8,33-37; Rev 4:3 • Sun (radiant face) Rev 1:16; Mt 17 • Holding a book Rev 5:8 • Feet Rev 1:15
Messiah? Lion (v.3) Job 4:9-10; Isa 31:4-5; Hosea 5:14; 11:10; Amos 3:8; Rev 5:5 Swears by efei Deut 32:40; Hebrews 6:13 Authority over land and sea Gen 1:9-10; Zech 9:10; Matthew 28:18; Eph 1:22; Rev 5:13 Messiah often appeared in the OT as “the Angel of the Lord” Ex 3:2; Judges 2:4; 6:11- 12, 21-22; 2 Samuel 24:16
Messiah? There are several similarities… …But similarity does not make identity! The word for another is allos, not heteros The words used are angelon ischyron – mighty/strong angel Used in other places Rev 5:2 Rev 18:21 Another of the same kind Another of a different kind
Messiah? Messiah is still in Heaven throughout the loosing of the seals and does not ride forth until all the seals, trumpets, and bowls have been issued (Rev 19:11) When Messiah appears in Revelation, John gives Him unmistakable titles:Rev 1:5; 1:13, 1:17; 1:18; 2:18; 3:7; 3:14; 5:5; 6:1; 6:16; 7:17; 8:1; 19:11; 19:13; 19:16
Messiah? It is my opinion that this is NOT Messiah
And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth, And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices. Revelation 10:2,3
The Little Book The book is open and John will be told to digest it Biblaridion – little book, ***as opposed to*** Biblion, book (from which we get our word Bible) Similar to the scroll that Ezekiel was told to eatEzekiel 3:1-2
And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth, And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices. Revelation 10:2,3
The Sea and the Earth What he places his foot upon, he demonstrates authority overDeuteronomy 11:24 The sea and earth depict the entire physical globe The sea represents the gentiles nations (Rev 13:1; 17:15) while the land represents the Jewish stewards of the Promised Land (Gen. 13:15; Lev. 25:10-28; 27:24; 2Chr. 10:7; Ps. 83:12; Joel 1:6; 3:2)
And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth, And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices. Revelation 10:2,3
And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not. Revelation 10:4
The Seven Thunders • The Seven Thundersutter their voices • John was about to write, but forbidden to • These may be the 7 angels with the 7 bowls about to be brought forth (Rev 10:7; 15:1) • Rev 10:4 leads us to believe the 7 thunders uttered more than one message …Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered,…
The Seven Thunders A few passages come to mind: Amos 3:7 Deuteronomy 29:29 Proverbs 25:2 2 Corinthians 12:1-4
And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer: Revelation 10:5,6
Under Oath • efei put Himself under oath when: • He made His covenant with Abraham Heb 6:13-20 • He declared His Son to be high priest Heb 7:20-22 • He promised David that Messiah would come from his family Acts 2:29-30
And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer: delay Revelation 10:5,6
Delay No Longer This angel is telling John that the long history of delay during which efei’s grace prevented Him from moving in final judgment has come to an end
But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of efei should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets. Revelation 10:7

“Mysteries” of: • Iniquity 2 Thess 2:7 • God and Christ Col 2:2 • The Faith 1 Tim 3:9 • Godliness 1 Tim 3:16 • The Seven Stars & Golden Lampstands Rev 1:20 • Babylon the Great Rev 17:5 • The Harlot Rev 17:7
And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth. And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey. Revelation 10:8,9
The “Meat” of the Word • Two imperative verbs: You take and Youeat • The emphasis is on John consuming completely what he is given to eat • Eating God’s Word is a frequent theme of Scripture • indicates the acceptance, digesting of, meditating upon, and sustenance derived from that which is eaten (Jer. 15:16)
The “Meat” of the Word Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.Job 23:12 Messiah, the Word of efei, declared Himself to be the bread of lifeJohn 6:27-35, 48 In the same way that God made Israel dependent upon manna, so too are His servants to be dependent upon his Word
The “Meat” of the Word God’s Word often compared to food: Bread Matt 4:4 Milk 1 Pet 2:2 Meat 1 Cor 3:1-2 Honey Ps 119:103 Assimilation is essential!
And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter. And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings. Revelation 10:10,11
People, Nations, Tongues, & Kings The very words chosen indicate the scope of the message with which John is trusted Ezekiel’s message (Ezekiel 3) was for the nation Israel Ezekiel is told to prophesy to the “the house of Israel; Not to many people of a strange speech” (Ezekiel 3:6) For much of what John relates is both about and against the earth dwellers around the globe
Next Session • Read Revelation chapter 11 • Pay special attention to the Two Witnesses (Who are they?) • Do some research on the temple – where did it stand, where/when will it be rebuilt?
