Why I chose this topic • Interested in languages/the world • Japan/Japanese • My dream job • Teaching friends language • Friends around the world (America, Japan, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Poland, and India, who speak English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, French, German, Polish, and Hindi)‏

Some quick facts... • There are 6912 languages in the world in 195 countries • In fifty years, about half of these languages will be lost • Worldwide, there are 760 million English speakers, 328 million of which speak the language natively (Less than 5% of the world population)‏ • Papua New Guina has the most languages of any country in the world, with 820 total • The language with probably the most words is English, with about 250,000 words • The language with the fewest words is Taki Taki (also called Sranan), 340 words  • 52.7% of Europeans are fluent in their language and another; 9.3% of Americans are

EQ: How does learning a second language improve societies and the world as a whole? • Helps to improve understanding between cultures and countries • Aids in finding and keeping jobs for businessmen • Connects people from different cultures and communities (I.E. using different dialects)‏ • Aids in the understanding of languages in one's own country (Bilingual countries)‏ • Gives better understanding to one's own language (And helps with testing scores, too!)‏ • Not everyone on Earth knows English!

Forms and usages of languages reflect a society's/country's culture • Just knowing the words is not enough; you need to know how they are used, and what they mean • Learning idioms and sayings as well is just as important; you need to know them to know the culture and ideas of the country and it's past. • It is impossible to master a language without mastering the cultural aspects of the language as well

Why understanding language is important • Understanding and preserving culture • Understanding a person's perspective and background • Being able to help and assist those who need it • Job opportunities • International cooperation and communication • The more you understand another language, the better you understand your own • Improves clarity of thought • Eliminates language as a barrier for understanding the world around you

Need for language speakers • 27% of schools teaching a second language or with ESL programs go without proper educators • Medical emergencies that can go treated improperly • Translators/Interpreters (Pop culture, books, movies, video games, etc)‏ • Translators/Interpreters for the government (Documents, speeches, interviews, etc)‏ • Multilingual countries/places (Airports, hospitals, embassies, hotels, etc)‏ • Multilingual families

Which language should I choose?(Based on number of speakers and number of countries it is spoken in)‏ • In the world: English, French, Spanish, Russian Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, German, Japanese, Portuguese, and Hindi/Urdu • In the Americas: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Japanese • Job based • Travel based • Country based (America: English and Spanish; Canada: English and French; Switzerland: German, French, Italian, and Romansh; etc)‏

Benefits to learning a second language • The knowledge of another language • Improvement of your own language (How you speak it and how others speak it (Dialects))‏ • Improvement of math skill • Improvement in thinking abilities/expressing abilities • More opportunities in life (Business, travel, friendships, etc)‏

In one study, it was noted that with no years of  language study, SAT scores were 366 on verbal and 409 on math; with 1 year of language study, the SAT scores were 378 on verbal and 416 on math, with 2 years of language study, SAT scores were 417 on verbal and 463 on math; and with 5 years of foreign language study, SAT scores were 504 on verbal and 535 on math. Pretty impressive how much it made a difference!
