  3. Drawbridge A wooden bridge leading to a gateway, capable of being raised or lowered.

  4. Moat A deep trench usually filled with water that surrounds a castle.

  5. Outer wall The outermost wall of the castle, used for keeping invading barbarians from overrunning the castle.

  6. Barbican An outwork or forward extension of a castle gateway.

  7. Inner Wall Inside wall used as a last line of defense against invaders.

  8. Keep The inner stronghold of the castle.

  9. Bailey Courtyard within the walls of the castle.

  10. Farm Place where crops are grown and livestock are kept.

  11. Battlements A narrow wall built along the outer edge of the wall walk to protect soldiers against attack.

  12. Siege Weapons (Catapult and Battering Ram) Catapult- used to launch large projectiles at castles. Battering Ram- used to break down enemy gates and walls.
