  2. 1848 • Napoleon III, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, rose to power and set up the 2nd Empire Here we go again! He WAS the President of the new republic but NOOOO… Despite his famous name, he brings France Neither glory nor an empire!

  3. France under Napoleon III • On the surface, it LOOKED like a constitutional monarchy • He ruled as a dictator • Appointing “elected” positions • Manipulated elections • Strictly censored newspapers But you know…once the French have tasted liberty, they cannot live under a tyrant!

  4. Napoleon III attempts reforms 1860(lest he lose is head!) Sorry, this slide is long! • Lifted censorship • Gave legislators more power • Introduced a new constitution • Organized the building of the SUEZ CANAL in Egypt! • Placed Maximillian of Austria on the throne of Mexico (huh?) • Winning the Crimean War gives France a slight hold in the Middle East (markets, resources you know).

More Mistakescome on Napoleon, study your history!! • Losses from the Crimean war bring little reward • France goes to war with her rival, Prussia, resulting in disaster: • The SEIGE OF PARIS!!!! • The Capture of Napoleon III • The fall of the 2nd Empire! After the Franco-Prussian loss… • A provisional government is set up, the 3rd Republic, lead by The National Assembly • A harsh peace is accepted with Germany that includes the loss of Alsece-Lorraine (oh that magical land between France and Germany…back and forth they go!) • Rebels rise up to reject the deal with the Germans …

  7. The Paris Commune“Save the republic from Royalists!”

  8. SCANDAL!! • The loss to Germany brings a “paranoia” to politics EVERYONE IS A SPY!!! EEK! • Boulanger attempts revenge on Germany and is accused of attempting of overthrow the French Government! • The nephew of the president is caught trying to sell nominations for France’s highest award and the president is forced to resign! • But the biggest scandal of all…

  9. The Dreyfuss Affair • 1894, Army officer Alfred Dreyfuss is accused of spying for Germany. • No evidence was presented, the trial was a sham! • He was hated because he was a Jewish officer…no other Jew ever gained so high an office in France! • He was imprisoned for treason! SHAM JUSTICE!

  10. ZIONISM • The Dreyfuss affair shows outward hatred for the Jews • A push for a “Jewish State” begins • Theodor Herzel, a Hungarian Jewish journalist, helped launch modern ZIONISM, the push for a Jewish Nation on “Moses’ Promised Land” which is Palestine in the middle east.
