SummaryThe Italian Volleyball Federation enters in the school educational system for the promotion, development and maintenance of volleyball in all its forms from recreational through the high level performance.To have a clear idea of what is our experience we will approach these main guidelines: • Italian country population and territorial organization • Italian Sport Organization system • The Italian Volleyball Federation movement and organization • The Italian Volleyball Federation Promotion and Developing Department at School • The Italian School system • Special Projects from the Italian Volleyball Federation entering the National public School system

  4. Italian country populationand territorial organization • Italy is located in central Europe and has 59 millions of inhabitants in a surface of 301.000 square metres .

  5. It is divided in 20 different regions, each region has several provinces for a total of 109 different provinces. • The population from 0 to 14 years old represents the 14,00 % of the total population. • The density for inhabitants is of 196 per square meter. • Women are 1,7 millions more than men’s.

  6. The Italian Sport Organization system • The Italian Olympic National Committee has 3,5 millions of members throughout all the National Sport Federations. • There are more than 58.000 Sport Clubs affiliated to the National federations with a total of 950.000 participants divided from athletes, officials, coaches and referees. • One fifth of the Italian population plays at least one sport. • The largest number of sport clubs affiliate to Federation is Soccer with 14.152 Clubs with 1 million and 51 thousand members than volleyball with 4.842 affiliate clubs and 294.446 participants and basketball that has 3.589 clubs with 278.362 participants. • Those three federations make the 38,7 % of all the affiliated clubs in the country and have the 46,6 % of the total o members in Italy . • The average of participation in sports for the school population from 11 to 14 years old reaches the 45,5 %.

The Italian Volleyball Federation – FIPAVmovement and organization • The FIPAV (Italian Volleyball Federation) has a national structure and regional and provincial structures. • The Regional and provincial committee will follow the directions from the National structure and will adapt it to their local reality and needs. • The FIPAV National Qualification Centre follow different fields of activities : Athletes - Referees - Coaches - Officials – Medical Commission – Antidoping

  11. The Italian Volleyball FederationPromotion and developing Department at School

Volleyball at school is present in the Italian Volleyball federation with the Promotion and developing Department at School and youth programmes. • The aim of the department is to promote the developing of projects where the educational goals are in evidence compared with the agonist aspect. • The department is divide in three different areas : • School area: create and develops projects in partnership between the school institutions and the volleyball federation. • Promotional area: deals with the promotional and recreational volleyball activities in partnership with the Promotion Sportive Institutions • Developing area: produces researches and studies on the models of the game suitable for the different areas of the game.

The Promotion and developing Department at School is composed from a Board of Direction composed by a member of the Federation Board of Administration, a Technical Coordinator, the three different areas coordinators and a administration secretary • The Board duties consist in approving and finance the projects presented by the different areas and to keep the relationships with the Federation bodies and the external relations with the Olympic Committee and the Minister of Public Education .

The Italian School System • The school of early childhood is for children from 3 to 5 years old , is not mandatory and it lasts 3 years. • The Primary or Elementary school is for children from 6 to 10 years old , it is mandatory and it lasts 5 years. • The Secondary School is divided in First grade and Second grade. • The first grade or Middle school is for students from 11 to 14 years old, it lasts 3 years and it is mandatory. • The second grade on the Secondary school is for students from 15 to 19 years old, it lasts 5 years and it is not mandatory there are different area of studies that the student can approach. • In the Primary schools the physical education activities are taught buy the same teacher who has not a specific knowledge of physical education and the University degree is not requested.

In the first and second level of the secondary school instead there are 2 hour per week of physical education and the teacher must have an university degree in PE. • Beside the PE classes in the secondary school there are some lessons of sportive activities after school schedule hours. In this classes the PE teacher trains the students for the Sport Student Games (maximum 6 ours per week) witch involves all the sport disciplines and this programme ends with the nation finals. • In the last ten years the Italian School System experienced important changes going from a central oriented organization to a local administration where the single schools now have more self organization duties in teaching and in the administration field. • Keeping the Nation Educational goals now the school has more capabilities to draw their own path to reach the education of the student. • The school now can deal directly with sport or other cultural agencies , privates or public, that can give a contribution to the education project of the schools.

Project for the Primary SchoolSchool Year 2006- 2007 THE PROJECT • The “1,2,3 …minivolley” project intend to increase the practice of physical education in the elementary schools throughout the play of the minivolley game. • The Italian Ministry of Public Education had recently point out, once more, the importance of the physical education in the elementary school as tool of the full education of the person. The Ministry promoted new initiatives to give more power to the school system in partnership with the sport field at national and regional level.

  18. The Italian Volleyball Federation, directly and together with the district committees and the sport associations, has already settled down a relation with the elementary schools base on many different initiatives that helped to develop minivolley as a tool able to accomplish important education goals. • Now we will see a promotional video that is distributed to all the Primary Schools and it is an introduction an promotion of the Minivolley. • As you will see the Coach of the Italian Volleyball Men’s national team and the players will show to children’s the secrets of the minivolley. ACTIONS • The Project has been presented to the media, to the schools and to the Federations local Committees an in a national press conference in Rome on December 14 2006 at the presence of the Ministry of Sport and Education and of the Board of Administration of the Italian Volleyball Federation. • The Project will last 3 years and it is planned that between the school years 2007 and 2009 the Primary schools will receive 10,500 Minivolley Kits (courts, balls, coaching manuals, videos). • The plan is to deliver the project to 65 % of the Italian primary schools reaching 1.600.000 students.

PURPOSES • The “1,2,3 …minivolley” project aims to promote the play of the minivolley game in the elementary school pointing out the education aspects of the game. • The game must be considered as a teaching method able to contribute with the other teaching methods. • The final aim is to participate in the global education system to obtain a balanced development of the child personality. • One of the most important goals of this project will be to search the means and the strategies to keep up the relation with the schools using the experience already had with the volleyball movement at national and local level.

  21. Minivolley will be presented as an easy sport to learn and to teach. • The child that begins to play minivolley will learn and gain satisfaction in a short period of time. • All will be achieved throughout the organization of courses, tournaments and events that will see as role player the students of the elementary schools together with the teachers in partnership with the volleyball clubs of the area interested in the project. • The initiatives methods will be the same at national level with training courses that will be carried out with images communication language, movies and multimedia technologies.

  22. GOALS • The project goals are: • To increase the practice of qualified motorial activities especially of the minivolley in the primary school. • To study and use a game model that , putting in evidence the educational aspects of minivolley, will suit the first and second cycle of the primary school both for boys and girls. • To circulate and make a careful study of the knowledge of the teachers on the primary school of the motorial activities programmes in general and specifically of the minivolley game. • To facilitate the partnership of the schools institutions with the suburban Volleyball Federation Committees and with the Volleyball Clubs.

THE INITIATIVES • The projects consist of several initiatives that will be designed to target the goals of the project. • Those initiatives will be modulated and adapted to the different needs of the teachers and the different single schools programmes and realities. • Minivolley Courses • Minivolley Tournaments • Clinics for Teachers • Provincial Tournament for schools

The minivolley courses • Those activities represents the most important part of the project and the aim is to teach to the children properly and in short time the game of minivolley. • The self-government system of the schools will aloud them to make the project in different ways: • The courses can be managed from the schools teachers by themselves or together with the partnership of the Volleyball Clubs existing in the area. It will be important to clarify how long will last the course, the methods used and the tools and all this aspect will be part of a Technical Guide.

The minivolley tournaments • This is the game and fun part for the students. • They will be played first at single class level than with other classes of the same school. • After that there will be a tournament between different schools of the same area with the partnership of the Volleyball Clubs of the area. • A tournament of the provincial area will be organized from The Provincial Volleyball Federation Committee.

  26. The project provides to the schools the following teaching material: • Courts and balls • Teaching manual • Videos Dvd promotional and coaching manual VIDEOS

Regarding the different age and skills capabilities of the students there will be different aspect of the tournament that the teachers will decide to use evaluating the class needs and their starting level • The aspects to evaluate in a tournaments will be: • Tournament formula • Size and weight of the minivolley balls • High of the net • Size of the court • Duration of each match

The Teachers Clinics • The teachers will learn from the clinics the teaching method of the game and how to use the project. • The clinics can be organised by the Provincial Volleyball Federation Committee and targeted to the primary schools of the Provincial area or they can be organised by the Volleyball Clubs in direct partnership with the schools. • During the clinics the teachers will be explained the method of teaching minivolley and will be explained how to use the teaching technical guide and the video Dvd . • The Provincial Clinics for the teachers will start right before of the beginning of the courses at school and the teachers will be followed by during the school year from the Volleyball Federation Provincial School Expert.

  29. THE PARTNERS • Considering the goals of the project, the size of the initiatives and the large number of participants the project is carried out with the support of great partners that are: • Italian Ministry of Public Education • Italian National Olympic Committee • National Associations of Local Institution (Municipalities) • The sponsor of the Italian Volleyball Federation for this project is FERRERO company with the KINDER brand.

  31. THE COMUNICATION • The project is promoted and spread out with the following initiatives: • National Press conference to present the project to the media. • Provincial Press conference to present the project to the media. • Project Brochure produced by the Italian Volleyball Federation that contains a summary of all the aspects of the project. It is sent to all the schools interested in the project. • Posters will be promote any event connected with the project • Clinics for the teachers: beside to teach the method of learning they promote the project all over the nation. • All the Media will receive during the project up-dates of events and relevant goals achieved in the project. • The communication and promotion of the project will be guarantee by the suburban structures of the Italian Volleyball Federation and of the Ministry of Public Education.

MONITORING THE PROJECT • The project includes a monitoring system to evaluate the number of participants and the level of satisfaction . • It will be carried out throughout questionnaires addressed to students, officials, teachers and families and will give the feedback during the project at the and of it.

  35. 1, 2 , 3 Volley !!! Project for the Middle School School Year 2006- 2007

  36. 1, 2 , 3 …..Volley !!! • This project is designed for the first class of the first cycle of the middle schools. • The II and III classes will take part at another tournament organised by the Students Youth games Organization. • A Volleyball Court divided in 3 small courts of minivolley is used. • The minivolley courts are 4,5 metres for 9 metres and there will be played class tournaments and tournaments between different schools. • This tournament is a part of a much wider project from the title "Grow with Volleyball" which the Volleyball Federation turns to young people proposing a game and activity progression conformed to the growth.

  37. The wide participation to such initiative, has shown how it is important from an educational aspect the role of the game as tool to achieve the education goals and to enable all the young students to approaches the practice of sport and of volleyball in particular. • The easy Formula of the tournament 1,2,3 Volley made all the student to be part of the event, being involved at different time with specific duties as player and as referees . • The tournament has different levels: class tournament, school tournament, between two or more schools and final Event with all the schools managed bye the Volleyball Federation Provincial Committee . • The success of the project came also from the contribution of a great Sponsor that supplied the schools with 5000 kit in 3 school years with the Kinder brand. • Those Kit included a ball bag with a volleyball net 20 meters long, 3 minivolley balls, 3 whistles and 10 uniforms of two different colours. Each class had his own kit.

  38. Receivers of the project • 2.347 1° grade of middle schools • 81.652 classes • 1.704.479 students • The percentage of volleyball played in school has been of 70 % and makes volleyball the first team sport played at school with an almost 50 % of participation from boys and girls.

This Project is in 2007 at the 14th editions and it is promoted by the Lazio Region Volleyball Federation Committee in partnership with the Ministry of Education • It is a tournament that last four months and it is played between the second Cycle of the Secondary schools of the Province of Rome . • The goal of the project is to give an opportunity to each school to play in a volleyball tournament. The Volleyball Federation Regional Committee provides the full organization together with partnerships and sponsor. • There are 4 different categories: • Boys Open - Boys junior - Girls Open - Girls Junior
