Background Information • Known as TB. • A disease caused by a bacterium called mycobacterium tuberculosis. • Most commonly attacks the lungs. • Can also infect kidneys, spine and brain. • TB is very deadly. • Spread when the bacteria are released from the lungs and into the air • Sneezing • coughing

  4. Miscellaneous • Falsely thought to spread through kissing, sharing drinks or shaking another’s hand. • Two types of TB conditions: • Latent TB infection (LTBI) • TB disease

  5. Symptoms • Bad coughs: coughing up sputum or blood • Pain in chest • Weakness or fatigue • Weight loss • Loss of appetite • Chills • Fever • Sweating at night

  6. Treatment • LTBI is easier to be treated • Isoniazid is taken for 9 months • Other medicine to help cope with the symptoms • Medicines have to be taken longer, 12 months, for HIV patients and kids

  8. Current Statistics • 1/3 of the worlds population is infected • Leading killer of HIV infected people • 12,904 cases reported in 2008 • Each year: • Over 9 million people are diagnosed with TB • 2 million deaths by TB worldwide

  9. 1990’s statistics • 1994- The amount of TB cases reported decreased to 2,995 • 1993- there were 3,252 reported cases of TB • 1992- TB reported cases peaked at 3,811and declined after that
