Fighting Food Safety • What is one of the most important thing you can do to fight food poisoning? Here are a few hints: • It takes only 20 seconds (if you do it the right way). • It requires only 3 ingredients. • Anyone can do it, even very young children. WASH YOUR HANDS
Fighting Food Safety • Wash Your Hands. Over and over again, • Studies have shown that hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of many types of infection and illness—including foodborne illness. • Poor personal hygiene of workers causes 25 to 40 percent of all food borne-related illness. • Many foodborne diseases and pathogenic microorganisms are spread by contaminated hands.
Wash your hands the right way • Wet your hands with clean running water (warm or cold) and apply soap. • Rub your hands together to make a lather and scrub them well; be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. • Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice. • Rinse your hands well under running water. • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry. • Turn off faucet with paper towel- not with your clean hand.

Glove Use • As soon as they become soiled • Before beginning a different task • After handling raw meat and before handling cooked or ready-to-eat foods • Remember to WASH YOUR HANDS between changing gloves
Significance of proper hand washing • Reduce bacterial contamination and risk of foodborne illness • Studies showed that simple act of washing hands with soap and water reduces incidents of diarrhea from shigella and other causes by up to 35%. • Hand washing is the one of the most effective and cheapest measures against infections and foodborne illness.
