  2. Intelligent Transportation Systems – ITS ITS is the use of advanced technology and communications to make our highways safer and more efficient WHY ITS? Our ever increasing population continues to create more traffic and make our roads more congested. Congestion is not only a hazard, it costs hundreds of millions of dollars in lost productivity each year, it contributes to environmental pollution and it has quality of life implications. We can no longer solve today’s transportation problems using yesterday’s solutions. Acquiring more space and building more roads is no longer the default option, and in fact, is fast becoming non-feasible. Through the strategic deployment of various devices along our highways, the NMDOT can make better use of our existing infrastructure, making it safer and more efficient.

  3. Full FHWA Oversight and Compliance Requires the Department to Demonstrate Adherence to Federal Regulations • ITS Deployments are planned and developed from an Architecture - modeled from the National ITS Architecture • Designed to provide common framework planning, defining and integrating systems • Accesses established standards (NTCIP) to ensure system compatibility

  4. Full FHWA Oversight and Compliance (cont.) Providing Independent Verification and Validation • ITS Systems are designed in strict accordance with the Federal Systems Engineering Requirements

  5. ITS - the use of advanced communications technologies and data collection techniques to improve transportation safety and mobility The NMDOT uses ITS to: Observe road conditions and monitor traffic Advise motorists and the public of road and traffic conditions Monitor weather conditions effect on our roadways Detect and Manage Highway Incidents • Manage maintenance and • construction activities
