  1. Welcome to Uppsala! Mats Andrémats.andre@irfu.se • Thursday May 18 13:00, room Å4003 15:00 Coffee (17:30 Dinner) • Friday May 19 09:00, room Å4003 10:00 Coffee splinters (other locations) 11:30 Lunch 13:00 Room Å4003 splinters (other locations) 15:30 end meeting

  2. Draft Agenda May 18 • Welcome, Cluster and EFW basics and status (MA) • EFW modes and operations (AIE) • EFW internal burst mode statistics (NE) • EFW SC 1 and 3 operations (AIE, YK) • Cluster data sets: CDs, DDS, CSDS, CAA (PAL) • The CAA: where we are and where we are going (HL) • Data exchange (beyond standard archives) (AV, SB) • Coffee • CAA data production (YK) • Revised look at plasma densities from Cluster SC potential (AP) • Polar wind measurements from wake studies (AIE) • ISADT analysis software (AIE, YK. RG) • Publications and future meetings (MA) • AOB

  3. Cluster Mission Overview • Launch: summer 2000 • Nominal mission: 2001 and 2002 (50%) • Extension 1: 2002 to 2005 (100%) • Extension 2: 2005 to 2009 (100%) • All spacecraft fully operational

  4. C3 C1 C4 C2 cusp tail Separation distance strategy C1,C2,C3 C3,C4 d

  5. Tail 2005

  6. Cluster Instrument Status • Most instruments are operational • Not operational ASPOC C1 (presently no ASPOC running) CIS C2 EDI C4

  7. EFWElectric Field and Wave www.cluster.irfu.se/efw=> operations => EFW for Dummies

  8. Common EFW Modes Normal Mode Telemetry (full orbit) • 2 E-field signals, 25 samples/s • 4 single probe signals, 5 samples/s Burst Mode 1 Telemetry (hour) • 2 E-field signals, 450 samples/s • 4 single probe signals, 5 samples/s Internal EFW burst (around 10 s) • 4 single probe signals, few 1000 samples/s

  9. EFW operational on all four SC • SC 1 Problem probe 1, 2001-12-28, somewhat reduced science data. • SC 2 Filter problem, 2001-07-25. Solution: use 180 Hz filter also in NM (25 samples/s) on all probes. • SC 3 Problem probe 1, 2002-07-29, somewhat reduced science data. • SC 4 OK

  10. SC 1, probe 1 and SC 3, probe 1 • First workaround: use only probe pair 3+4 EFW prime parameters (4s) OK • Reprogrammed to use 3 probes to get 2 orthogonal E (routine operations from late September 2003) • From January 2006: In NM, use only probe pair 3+4 for E use probe 2 to get SC potential at 25 samples/s

  11. SC spin axis tiltWHISPER proposal

  12. Tilt is feasible Thermal main constraint Decide later Duration a few weeks 45 degrees? Apil 2007? SC spin axis tilt
