  1. CSU Social Media Policy

  2. Adopted December 21, 2010 “This policy will apply only to social media accounts created for the express purpose of officially representing Colorado State University groups, departments, programs, entities, etc. and will not apply to private social media accounts. University employees acting in an individual capacity should exercise caution to communicate clearly that they are not acting in a representative capacity, or expressing the views of the University.”

  3. Developed to protect users of social media • Brand identification and reputation management • Campus-wide best practices • Application • Two CSU employees associated with accounts • Provide a trail for cases of hacking, etc. • Disclaimer sent to user after application completed • University backing if all steps are followed

  4. Social Media Best Practices • Good information when just starting out • Good information as refresher • Good information to keep up-to-date with latest trends

  5. Once you have applied • Disclaimer will be sent to be put on your page • Profile photos will be reviewed • CSU graphics can be used • Will be checked for proper usage • Listed in ‘Officially Recognized Accounts’ directory

  6. Other considerations • 4-H Clubs • Volunteer groups If they are official groups, a CSU employee should be associated with these.

  7. Don’t create a social media account unless you have the time (and information) to share on a regular basis (post and monitor). (This is the same philosophy as any outreach communication material.)

  8. Facebook • Fan Page vs Group • Not allowed to create a personal profile for an organization • CSU policy does not recognize personal account

  9. Facebook • Groups • Not public, ‘insiders’ only • Fan Page • Better for communication with the public www.facebook.com/pages/create.php

  10. Facebook • Facebook in particular is subject to SPAM • One good reason for continual monitoring • Block users if necessary
