HIGH SCHOOL GEORGIA MILESTONES UPDATE On Friday, 8/15, the GA DOE notified districts of the following EOC (formerly EOCT) administration implications for 2014-15. We are currently awaiting clarity from the DOE on alternatives and will keep you informed with Cobb’s plan to move forward. • There will NOT be an EOC available in time for Block Schedule students enrolled in Economics, CCGPS Accelerated Algebra, CCGPS Accelerated Geometry A , CCGPS Geometry B or Advanced Algebra who would typically have taken the EOC at the 9-week mark of first semester. Instead, the DOE is suggesting that these students will participate in the Winter EOC administration in December. (The state has indicated that administering the former EOCT is not an option.) • The State Board of Education will be reviewing a recommendation to waive the 20% EOC requirement from the final grade for the entire year because of anticipated delays in returning the results. We are aware of the serious implications of offering an alternative final exam or modifying gradebook weights at this time (not to mention that syllabi have already been distributed). The State Board of Educationwill be taking up this recommendation this Thursday and we will provide additional clarity as soon as possible. High School Pre-ID Labels Why is this process important? It attaches the right students to the data that will result from Georgia Milestones. It locks schools into the type of test administration that will occur. The screenshot below is of the coding screen for Georgia Milestones Administration. The coding triggers the data-load for online testing. Once the window closes on 8/22/14, your school will be committed for the year to the type of test administration selected. Please review this coding. Office of Assessment and Personalized Learning Teaching and Learning Division
What can teachers do now? The DOE piloted Georgia Milestones Formative Open-Ended Items last year and published Key Findings from the pilots to inform assessment practices: Overall performance shortfalls Students are not familiar with these types of items and make the following errors: • Many respond ‘dnk’ – as in ‘do not know • They don’t seem to understand the need to “show” their work, detail their thoughts, rationales, cite evidence to support their answer or claim • The tendency is to cite the answer only – as if a multiple-choice item • They don’t read carefully and answer all parts of the question/item More information will be available at Leadership and Learning on September 3rd.
