Introduction to searching LeddyLibrary
Steps • starting with some intellectual effort, • taking a topic and posing ourselves questions, • working that question into manageable form, • establishing a working thesis to direct our investigation, • breaking thesis into conceptual components to give our search structure and organization, • identifying searchable terms, • interrogating an appropriate database, or set of databases .
Research begins with a question example What factors effect nursing student retention? depending on circumstances, the basis for the question can be made broader or narrower
Broader nursing student retention • nursing student recruitment and retention • health science student retention • science student retention • university student retention • postsecondary student retention • university student recruitment and retention
Narrower: use W5, or PICOT, or whatever works for you. (or the Instructor) • who? – mature nursing students • what? – debt obligations • where? – in Canada • when? – during 2008-2010 • why? – burnout nursing student retention
When is a question too broad? • when the answer has no single focus • raises more questions than can be answered • lacks specifics • has too many competing ideas • when there is too much research literature • database search turns up hundreds of references • internet search turns up thousands of websites • When is a question too narrow? • theoretically - never • practically - when research is hard to find Nurses call the shots!
My questions Is there a significant difference in the retention of male and female nursing students ? What are the factors that exacerbate the retention of men in nursing programs? Is gender discrimination a significant deterrent to men in nursing education? A nurse who can smile when things go wrong is probably going off duty.
Thesis statement • short summary of the argument or analysis that is to • follow. • Why is it necessary? • states your position • pin point your argument and test the merit of your idea • better organization • direct the search for supporting research
My thesis Gender discrimination is a significant factor in discouraging male nursing students from continuing in a nursing program. Comedy is a god given gift, and nurses have it!
Translating my thesis into searchable terms nurse or nurses or nursing student or students or university or universities or college or colleges or education or educating or train or training retention or retain or retaining or attrition male or males or men or gender or sex bias or biases or discrimination or discriminating or discriminate or equity or balance or equal or equality Patient: I think I swallowed a pillow. Nurse: How do you feel? Patient: A little down in the mouth.

Doctors practice but Nurses know!
Be kind to Nurses! Eventually, they will see you naked.
Patient: I can't get to sleep. Nurse: Sit on the edge of the bed and you'll soon drop off.
Interns think of God, residents pray to God, doctors talk to God, nurses ARE God.
leddy.uwindsor.ca Patient: What did the x-ray of my head show? Nurse: Absolutely nothing!
Nurse: Your pulse is as regular as clockwork. Patient: You've got your hand on my watch!
1st Nurse, How is that little girl who swallowed the 20 dollar bill? 2nd Nurse: No change yet.
Patient: I feel like a pack of cards. Nurse: I'll deal with you later
Nurses save butt, and maybe kick it too!
leddy.uwindsor.ca Patient: I broke my arm in two places! Nurse: Well don't go back there again!
Doctor: Did you take the patient's temperature? Nurse: No. Is it missing?

Nurses have a code for every colour, including brown.
