What is Web 2.0? • It allows easier information sharing, user-centered design, and collaboration on the World Wide Web • Allows users to have more control over their data • Term was coined in 1999 by Darcy DiNucci • O’Reilly Media hosted first conference • Argued that “the costumers are building the business for you” • Wanted to harness text, videos, and pictures to create value
Where is Web 2.0 Used? • Podcasting • Audio Blogging • Tagging • Social Bookmarking • Social Networking • Wikis • Media Sharing Sites
Web 1.0 vs. 2.0 Web 1.0 Web 2.0 Sites are dynamic Account owners can update (MySpace, Facebook) Sites are interactive Anyone can visit and alter, add o contribute (Wikis, blogs) Open source program The source code for the application or program is available for free • Sites are static • Provide information, but never change • Sites are not interactive • Visitors cannot add, alter, or contribute to the site • Applications are proprietary • Philosophy of Web 1.0 is that users can’t see how applications on the site work
