BPO – Undergraduate Career Services • Because the stakes are so high, the BPO Undergraduate Career Services staff have created 2 unique educational programs designed to help KSOB students get started on the road to employment. • X220: Career Perspectives • X420: Business Career Planning and Placement
BPO Aim: Three-Fold Goals • To aid students in determining career goals. • To help students develop a plan for achieving these goals. • To assist students in implementing their plan and in obtaining a business position commensurate with their goals, interests, and training.
eProjects was launched by the BPO in Fall 2001. It is an integrated process to guide the student through the course (X220 or X420) syllabus and project assignments. Students upload their project assignments directly onto the BPOWEB from eProjects.
Student Evaluation of eProjects • 99% found eProject “upload directions” easy to understand. • 78% did not experience any problems with uploading a project. • Of those experiencing a problem, 14% experienced them from a home computer.
X220 Career Perspectives • Guides beginning students through self-assessments and career explorations and assists in setting short- and long-term goals. • 2 credit hour course • Course serves as a vehicle for discovery and preparation. • Course Director: Dr. Cynthia Rex
X220 Career Perspectives • Course designed to introduce the student to the process of career planning. • Calls for the student to make several tentative academic and career decisions based on the students self-assessments and career interests. • Aids in preparing the student for the transition from college student to professional employee.

Grading for X220 is based on a point accumulation system. You accumulate points in two ways: - Attending class sessions - Submitting passing projects.
Students can track lecture, topic session, lab session, project and advantage point totals directly from the BPO website.
Students are provided many options in terms of designing their own course path. There are attendance minimums for each type of session. The “snapshots” are actual examples of the online screens used by students and lab counselors in both X220 and X420.
Written projects are designed to draw upon the students communication skills and help them to develop these skills through practice and application while exploring career-related issues.
Written projects must be uploaded via the BPOWEB prior to the students scheduled lab session appointment time.

X220 Alumni Panels • 6 Friday classes per semester are devoted to Alumni Panels moderated by faculty from Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, Marketing, Management and Operations.
X220 Participation Panels • Internship Panels • Seniors who completed internships are invited to bid to participate in panel discussions for sophomore students in X220. • International Panels • Students enrolled in X420 who have worked or studied overseas experience the opportunity to discuss their experience with X220 students • Leadership Panels • Seniors who have been involved with organizations volunteer each semester to participate in panel discussions for sophomores on the importance of participation and leadership in extra-curricular services.
X220 Alumni and Senior Mentoring • Alumni Mentoring is offered as part of X220. • Senior Mentors from X420 take part in X220. • Alumni who volunteer to participate mentor 6-10 students per evening, describing their day-to-day activities in their current positions and relating the courses and activities they found beneficial while at IU. • In 2000-2001, 234 alums participated in the mentoring programs. • X220 Mock Interviews
X420 Business Career Planning and Placement • Serves as a roadmap – reveals your options in career planning. • 2 credit hour course • Required course in KSOB. • Course Director: April Legler
X420 Business Career Planning and Placement • Beneficial to all students, both those who are actively in the job search and for those who have already accepted an offer. • Transitions students from an academic environment to a career setting. • Focuses upon careers in the business and management functional areas within the private enterprise sector of the economy.

Grading for X420 is based on a point accumulation system. You accumulate points in two ways: - Attending class sessions - Submitting passing projects.
Students may view their grade screen at any time from the BPO website or eProjects.
Four projects must be completed, each with A or B work, in order to receive credit for other requirements in the course. Six projects must be completed with a passing grade to earn a “B”. Seven projects must be submitted and earn a passing grade to achieve an “A”

Submitted projects appear at the top of page so that the student and lab counselor can review the project together in lab session appointment. • Grading scale and comment section appear at the bottom for Career Counselor use.

Student Evaluations of X420 • 87% recommend continuing with the existing projects over exams. • 90% felt the projects were helpful in career planning. • 70% stated they would enroll in the course if it was not required based on information they know now after the course. • 89% were happy to have their project graded “on the spot” by their Career Counselor. • 77% like having alumni volunteers in the lab sessions • 92% stated their lab counselor was prepared, interested and easy to talk to. • 31% stated the assessment tests were not helpful to them but should be available to others • 57% stated the assessment tests were useful to them. • 6% thought the project descriptions were difficult to understand.
Advantage Sessions • Designed to highlight presentations on career planning, job search techniques and key business skills. • Provides an alternative “track” of career information for both X220 and X420 students.
Professional Opportunities Orientation Program (POOPS) • Over 150 employers participate in this program every year. • POOPS sessions replace 7 of the regular lecture classes. • Designed to orient the student to the initial job prospects after college.
Alumni Mentoring • Alumni Mentoring is offered as part of X420. • Alumni who volunteer to participate mentor 6-10 students per evening, describing their day-to-day activities in their current positions and relating the courses and activities they found beneficial while at IU. • In 2000-2001, 234 alums participated in the mentoring programs. • Informational Interviewing • Senior Resume Review
Corporate Lecture Information Program (CLIPS) • During 6 of the regular lecture sessions, corporate guests are invited to present material regarding specific topics. • Lecture topics cover such subjects as behavioral interviewing, online interviewing, online job search, career development and communications.
