Discuss Talk to one or two other people about the current peer observation system at your school. Feel free to use the following prompts to guide your conversation • Do you have a peer observation system at your school? • Compulsory/Optional/Non-existent? • How successful is it? • What’s it for? Does everyone know this? • Do people do it? • Do they develop through doing it? • How does it work? (pre, during, post)

Research data • Systems that exist mostly DoS/Manager driven • Pre observation: occasionally meeting, forms to be filled in, often nothing • Observation: some tasks, occasionally negotiated • Post observation: discussion – forms (some cases)
Some benefits • Excellent source of PD for observer and observed • Not top down (ideally) • Creates conditions for culture of feedback • Perceived as developmental rather than judgmental • Cheap
Obstacles? Or, why doesn’t it work better? • Seen as imposed • Seen as not important • No time • No time to do it well • People don’t know how to observe • People don’t know how to give feedback (or receive it) • Fear • Is proof needed and what form does it take?
How to overcome? • Discuss with your partner(s) how your school has overcome these obstacles, or how you might like to try to do so • Seen as imposed • Seen as not important • No time • No time to do it well • People don’t know how to observe • People don’t know how to give feedback (or receive it) • Fear • Is proof needed and what form does it take?
How do we overcome the obstacles? Some ideas: Make it bottom up • Sell the virtues of effective peer observation, but get teachers to define the structure and approach Bear in mind its importance • Make sure time is given. Make it part of contractual time • What about evidence? Support people • Offer training in observation • Possible tasks • Offer training in giving and receiving feedback
