Hybrid silica membranesforaffinitybasedmembraneseparation PhD. Student: M.J.T. Raaijmakers Phone: 0534892859 Thesis advisor: A. Nijmeijer E-mail: m.j.t.raaijmakers@utwente.nl Supervisor: N.E. Benes URL: http://www.utwente.nl/tnw/im/people/phds/raaijmakers/ Research group: Inorganic Membranes Research school: University of Twente Supported by: ISPT Period: 01-06-2011 until 01-06-2015 • Here, we present the formation of hybrid POSS-polyamide, in the form of supported ultrathin films (~100 nm). The films combine intrinsic local ordering of inorganic and organic constituents on the molecular scale. • The films, with potentially infinite lateral macroscopic dimensions, exhibit molecular selectivity in liquid permeation experiments. Both toluene and water permeate through the layer, which is a result of the hybrid character of the material. • Polyhedraloligomericsilsesquioxane (POSS) basedmembranes are preparedbyinterfacialpolymerization. PAN supports prewettedwith POSS solution are contactedwithanorganicphasecontainingan acid chloride, resulting in defect-free ultrathinlayerformationwithin 5 minutes.
