  1. Measurement Length, Volume, Mass & The Metric System

  2. The Metric System Decimal system Powers of 10 2 Parts : Prefix – how many multiples of 10 milli, centi, kilo Base Unit - meter, liter, gram…… Add a prefix and base and: ex. Millimeter, centigram, kiloliter

  3. Metric Chart Kilo  means thousand (1000) Hecto means hundred (100) Deca means ten (10) BASE UNIT: g, L , m, etc ( 1 ) Deci means one-tenth (1/10) Centi means one-hundredth (1/100) Milli means one-thousandth (1/1000)

  4. k h D d c m Conversions • convert 25 mg to grams • convert 0.45 km to mm • convert 35 mL to liters • It works because the math works, we are dividing or multiplying by 10 the correct number of times • DRUL Rule: Down, Right, Up, Left

  5. Conversions • convert 25 mg to grams • convert 0.45 km to mm • convert 35 mL to liters • Use Conversion Factors & Dimensional Analysis Example:

  6. Measurement • Must have a standard. • A standard is an exact quantity people agree to use for comparison. • A standard means two people using the same object should get close to the same results.

  7. Standards of the Past • People used fingers, feet, arms to determine the length of something. • This is how the term “foot” came about. • The standard yard was the distance from the king’s nose to his outstretched arm.

  8. The Meter- Measures Length Length is the distance between two points • The Liter –Measures Volume Volume is how much space a substance takes up • The Gram- Measures Mass Mass is how much matter is in a substance

  9. Length • Length- is the distance between two points as well as Area, L X W. • We use a metric ruler to measure length. • The standard unit of length we use is the meter.

  10. Volume Volume is the amount of space a substance takes up. It can be measured 2 different ways: • Ruler: measuring L X W X H, units3 This method is for regularly shaped objects

  11. Volume 2. Water Displacement: Using graduated cylinder and water, read the initial level of the water, drop the object into the water, read the final level of the water. The difference in water levels is the amount of space the object displaced or the VOLUME of the object. This method is for irregularly shaped objects.

  12. Mass • Mass is a measurement of the amount of matter a substance contains. • Mass is measured ingrams and kilograms. 1 paper clip = 1 gram 1000g = 1 kilogram The average human adult weighs 75kg.

  13. Measuring Mass The Triple Beam Balanceis the tool we use to measure mass.

  14. How to use a Triple Beam Balance 1) Make sure that the balance scale is at zero or tare. 2) Place object on balance scale and move the largest rider one notch at a time until the beam drops. Move the rider back one notch (make sure it lock in place) 3) Move the next largest rider until the beam drops. Back it up one notch. 4) Move the smallest rider until the beam swings equally above and below the zero mark. 5) Add up all the numbers to find the mass! Don’t forget Units!! Read to the correct amount of decimal places for that piece of equipment.

  15. Calculate The Mass

  16. Digital Scales Our digital scales measure to the thousandths position, 3 decimal places and hundredths, 2 decimal places
