Background Information • Dean Mark charged the Diversity Assessment Committee to develop a diversity assessment instrument. • Diversity Assessment Committee started meeting Spring 2009. • A field experience Diversity Reflection Essay writing prompt and rubric were developed and field tested Spring 2009 with a small number of respondents (n=11).
Background Information • Minor changes were made to the writing prompt and scoring rubric. • Fall 2009-All student teachers and graduate practicum students were required to complete the diversity reflection rubric. • Information was disseminated through Blackboard (survey tool). • Availability of the survey was from Saturday, November 14, 2009 8:00 AM until Saturday, November 21, 2009 8:00 PM. • Students submitted essays to Turnitin.
Background Information • Return Rate • General Education Student Teachers 91/100 • Special Education Student Teachers 38/39 • Dean Mauch recruited Drs. Molly Marnella and Deborah Stryker to score Diversity Reflection Essays. • One essay jointly graded with discussion. • Nine essays graded independently followed by discussion to determine level of agreement. • Ten essays graded independently to determine inter-rater reliability. • 81 additional surveys were scored independently.
