Welcome to Mrs. Dewey’s 6th Grade Reading Class • Things to know about me: • I have two kids in Hernando Schools. • I love to fish, read, cook, travel, scrapbook, eat m&m’s, & ride 4-wheelers. • I grew up close: Lacoochee – lived in Gainesville 8 yrs. – now I’m back near family • I’m BIG on manners! • I love to see kids learn!

Classroom Rules: 1. Be Responsible -I will be on time to class and ready to start work. -I will have my agenda and all proper materials. 2. Be Respectful -I will keep my words and actions nice. -I will keep my hands, feet, and objects to myself. 3. Be Cooperative -I will raise my hand for permission to speak and listen when others are speaking. -I will work quietly and complete all of my assignments. 4. Be Honest -I will always tell the truth. -I will do my own work.

Why is this the most important class you’ll ever take? “If you CAN’T read you CAN’T do these things either!” • Have a high paying job • Surf the Internet • Speak intelligently • Drive a car • Fill out important forms • Help your children with their homework
Being a good reader allows you to earn good things! • Opportunities otherwise closed to you- • A high paying job! • The ability to think on higher levels and be more intelligent • Find things/info. easily (on-line) • Respect from others • Pride in yourself
Things we will cover this year: • Bell work – (start as soon as you enter) • Textbook stories, book questions, workbooks, & tests • Jamestown stories • SRA reading stories • Theme Unit projects • Skills:outlining, main idea, authors point of view& purpose, predicting, comparing/contrasting, interpretations, conclusions, word meaning, summarizing, researching
Steps to Good Reading 1. Pre-Reading establishes purpose & monitors learning processes: Pre-reading activities help the learner by one or more of the following: 1. motivate the reader2. establish a purpose for reading3. activate prior experiences and knowledge4. build background information5. introduce key vocabulary and concepts6. provide direction for instruction through prediction or preview strategies
Steps to Good Reading 2. Comprehending Reading is constructing meaning from the text: Vocabulary is essential! 1. Explicit Instruction: Students are given definitions or attributes of words to be learned. 2. Implicit Instruction: Students are exposed to words in a literature-rich environment. 3. Multimedia Methods: Vocabulary is taught by enhancing the concepts of the word. (graphic representations) 4. Capacity Methods: Practice, practice, practice. 5. Associate Methods: Learners make connections between their prior knowledge and new words
Steps to Good Reading • Literal comprehension: Find information ‘right there’ in the text. (What color was Suzy’ dress?) • Interpretive comprehension: Read between the lines. (What happened in the story to let you know that Billy loved Shiloh?) • Applied comprehension: Reading beyond the lines. (What did the story teach you about pets?) 3. Assimilation of Text is the ability to restate new concepts acquired and use them in a novel situation
Classroom Procedures 1. Come in quietly, put homework in tray, sit in your assigned seat, get materials out, fill-out planner – leave on desk corner all period 2. Do your bell work independently and quietly 3. Participate in class assignments/discussions 4. Listen & focus carefully during skill modeling and lesson directions. 5. Quietly begin and try your best on assigned class work. • Raise your hand and ask me any questions you have. • You will be dismissed by me – not the bell.
